Captain Karen Miller of the Coast Guard Auxiliary delivered an extensive presentation on the organization’s role in promoting boating safety and providing support to the Coast Guard. Established by Congress in 1939, the auxiliary’s mission is to enhance safety compliance and effective boating operations. Today, it consists of approximately 18,500 members who assist the Coast Guard in various capacities except law enforcement. Captain Miller emphasized the auxiliary’s value as a force multiplier for the relatively small Coast Guard, which is part of the Department of Homeland Security.

During her presentation, Captain Miller engaged the audience with questions about boating experiences and safety practices. She explained that many fatal boating accidents involve individuals without formal boating education, highlighting the need for the auxiliary’s educational programs. The auxiliary also plays a role in community outreach, environmental monitoring, and responding to pollution reports.

The auxiliary’s volunteer efforts extend to critical support during hurricane seasons, where they assist with patrols and radio watches using their own boats that meet Coast Guard standards. They also conduct vessel safety checks at local boat ramps, providing safety decals to compliant vessels and guidance to those needing further information. Additionally, the auxiliary engages in search and rescue missions, participates in regatta patrols, and collaborates with Coast Guard aircraft in training exercises.

In a notable moment, Mayor Rector acknowledged the auxiliary’s contributions over its 75-year history, particularly their role in saving lives through rescue operations and boating education. However, he expressed concern over the Coast Guard’s financial hardships, noting that some members had been unpaid for 75 days, affecting their families. Captain Miller responded by mentioning the Coast Guard Mutual Association, which offers financial assistance to active-duty members.

The meeting also featured David Garcia from Spectrum Government Affairs, who discussed the company’s impact on local communities. Spectrum has invested over $51 billion in U.S. infrastructure and employs approximately 90,000 people. Garcia emphasized the importance of broadband expansion in underserved areas, promoting economic development, remote work, telehealth, and education.
