Bayonne School Board Addresses Speech Therapy Concerns, Graduation Rate Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
During the Bayonne School Board meeting, members discussed the recruitment of three new speech therapists to address community concerns about adequate student services. Additionally, notable improvements in graduation rates at Bayonne High School and the Bayonne Alternative High School were highlighted, reflecting ongoing educational strategies and support.
A focus of the meeting was the ongoing challenges and solutions related to speech therapy services for students. A board member inquired about the plan to ensure that all students receive necessary services, emphasizing community concerns about waitlists and service adequacy. In response, it was confirmed that three new speech therapists had been retained and would soon start working within the district. The board member was assured that plans were in place to provide compensatory services for any missed therapy sessions.
Graduation rates were another key topic, with the board celebrating a 3.7% increase at Bayonne High School, bringing the rate to 94.2%. The Bayonne Alternative High School also saw a substantial 12.8% increase in its graduation rate, now at 58%. The superintendent attributed these improvements to enhanced support systems within the schools, including social-emotional counselors and progress monitoring focused on critical subjects like English Language Arts and math. The intent is to facilitate students’ return to Bayonne High School from the alternative program.
Additionally, the meeting covered various school activities and achievements. The board celebrated the district’s participation in a Veterans Day parade and a “Field of Heroes” ceremony, both aimed at honoring veterans and educating students on historical sacrifices. The superintendent also announced the district’s esports team competing for state and national championships.
Concerns about security staffing for upcoming winter sports events were raised, particularly regarding the allocation of security guards for busy seasons like basketball. It was clarified that the district has 55 security guards and is not aiming for cost savings but rather ensuring appropriate staffing to maintain safety at all events.
