Concerns were also raised by a parent regarding the district’s gifted and talented program, specifically questioning the curriculum’s rigor and the variety of field trip opportunities available to students. The parent suggested more challenging and stimulating activities, such as trips to cultural institutions like NJPAC, to better motivate and engage talented students. In response, Superintendent John Niesz highlighted the district’s collaboration with Johns Hopkins University to enhance the program and assured that steps are being taken to address these concerns.

Textbook availability was another issue brought up during the meeting. A parent reported that some students still lacked textbooks two weeks into the school year, attributing the delay to late orders. Superintendent Niesz acknowledged the problem and promised to investigate and resolve the issue to ensure that all students have the necessary materials from the start of the school year.

Additionally, the board discussed measures to handle student conduct and ensure a conducive learning environment. A parent voiced concerns about disruptive behavior in classrooms and the impact on students who are there to learn. The parent called for stricter enforcement of the code of conduct and greater accountability for parents of disruptive students.

The meeting also included a report from the Bayonne High School Student Government Association (SGA), which outlined upcoming events such as the homecoming game, pep rally, and various initiatives aimed at enhancing student engagement. The SGA highlighted the success of the recent freshman orientation and the positive impact of their activities on the new students’ transition to high school.
