- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Becker City Council meeting, members approved a plan to tackle the community’s childcare shortage while also endorsing modest utility rate increases to maintain financial stability. The meeting featured discussions on various topics, including the purchase of essential city equipment and updates on local development projects.
The council’s adoption of the Community Solutions Action Plan marked a step in addressing the childcare gap, identified as a shortage of approximately 265 slots. This initiative, part of the Rural Child Care Innovation program led by First Children’s Finance, aims to collaborate with local businesses, Becker Schools, and county licensors. The plan includes building awareness among business leaders about the impact of childcare on workforce development, identifying potential sites for expanding childcare facilities, and fostering community partnerships. Council members expressed gratitude for the extensive efforts of those involved in crafting this plan, which is set to be implemented over the next 10 to 12 months. A motion to adopt Resolution 2490, approving the plan, passed without opposition.
In financial matters, the council reviewed a utility rate study that recommended increases to ensure the sustainability of water and sewer operations. The proposed adjustments include a 3% increase in the monthly service fee rates for water and a 2% increase in tiered usage rates, while domestic sewer rates are set to rise by 5% annually over the next three years. The study estimated that the average residential customer would see an annual increase of approximately 3.9%, equating to about $35, deemed necessary to maintain targeted cash reserves. After a brief discussion, the council approved the study.
Additionally, the council deliberated on the purchase of a used 2021 John Deere progator, prioritizing budgetary considerations. With the city’s experience of maintaining a 17-year-old unit until its transmission failure, the decision to acquire a used model from Van Wall Equipment was seen as a financially prudent move. This purchase will be funded through the 2025 Capital Improvement Plan, alleviating current budget pressures. The motion to approve this acquisition was passed without objection.
The meeting also featured a presentation from Chad Delheimer of the local archery club, who expressed gratitude for the council’s support. Delheimer highlighted the program’s growth, with 266 students currently registered. He stressed the importance of the new archery range for practice and competition, emphasizing the commitment of 53 volunteer coaches. Following his remarks, a group photo was arranged with the archers, celebrating the club’s achievements.
In routine matters, the council approved the consent agenda, which included various resolutions and donations from local organizations. Notable contributions included $458 from the Becker Youth Sports Association for facility improvements and $1,000 from Diod Adventures for community events. Council members expressed satisfaction with these projects coming in under budget, reflecting efficient fiscal management.
