Becker City Council Approves Edgewood Street Improvement Plans Amid Community Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Becker City Council meeting focused on significant infrastructure projects, notably the approval of plans and specifications for improvements on Edgewood Street. The council authorized taking the project out to bid with an opening date set for April 13th. Additionally, the council addressed community apprehensions about the potential closure of the Becker Post Office and approved a financial commitment towards a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to investigate its status.
The Edgewood Street improvement project dominated discussions due to its critical role as a primary thoroughfare utilized by pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists. The plans propose maintaining the existing road width while adding curb and gutter systems to better manage stormwater. A significant element of the project involves raising the trail out of the ditch to improve water management. Compliance with Minnesota State Aid Standards necessitates detailed reviews of the construction drawings and stormwater management strategies.
The council also discussed adjusting the speed limit on Edgewood from 40 mph to 35 mph, a change supported by both the public works department and the police chief to enhance pedestrian and motorist safety. Plans include relocating the trail to the west side of the road and reducing pedestrian conflicts by eliminating certain crosswalks, thereby streamlining crossings. A representative outlined a plan to collaborate with Kexus Energy to install additional LED lights along the trail and at intersections to address these concerns.
The council engaged in a debate over the necessity of sidewalks and paths on both sides of Edgewood. Some members raised safety concerns related to traffic patterns and visibility issues. The discussion explored enhancing crosswalk visibility with advanced warning signs or LED-embedded signage. However, the possibility of creating a false sense of security among pedestrians was acknowledged, emphasizing the need for cautious implementation.
Community involvement was encouraged with an upcoming open house scheduled for March 23rd, allowing residents to inquire about the project and provide input. Engagement with property owners along Edgewood is underway to address challenges posed by local properties and driveway access in relation to elevation changes.
In addition to infrastructure projects, the council addressed concerns regarding the Becker Post Office. A complaint had been filed with the Postal Regulatory Commission, sparking fears of a potential permanent closure, similar to the Welsh Minnesota Post Office closure in 2021. Research into a FOIA request was discussed to gather communications related to the post office’s status. The township meeting resulted in a decision to proceed with a joint FOIA request, with a cost-sharing agreement of up to $1,000.
The council approved the mayor’s authorization to sign the FOIA request. The strategy for the FOIA request includes allowing for redactions of sensitive information while still obtaining pertinent dates and timelines.
Other notable discussions included the procurement of new equipment for the public works department, focusing on the replacement of aging tools and vehicles. The council approved the purchase of a new 2026 toolkit and the replacement of a Mahindra UTV with a Can-Am Defender, noting the Defender’s superior performance and comfort. Additionally, the council addressed the replacement of pumps at Lift Station and Lift Station 14, both exceeding their expected lifespans. Approval was granted for these replacements.
