Becker City Council Moves Forward with Police Department Communication Enhancements and Golf Course Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Becker City Council meeting, strides were made in addressing police department communication deficiencies, advancing golf course upgrades, and discussing infrastructure and community projects. The council approved a contract to enhance radio signal coverage in the police department and endorsed the next phase of improvements for the local golf course, all while deliberating on critical housing and transportation initiatives.
A primary focus of the meeting was the resolution to improve radio communication within the police department. Following the department’s relocation to a new building, officers experienced signal issues with dispatch communications, traced back to the building’s infrastructure, specifically the new windows and mechanical systems. To address this, the council evaluated three proposals to install a bidirectional amplifier and antennas to bolster radio coverage. DSC Communications submitted the most cost-effective proposal at $27,819, including a three-year service plan, which the council approved unanimously. The funds for this improvement are available from the building project budget.
In another key development, the council approved the third phase of the cart path improvement plan at the Becker golf course. With a budget of $100,000 allocated from the golf capital improvement plan (CIP), the initiative aims to finalize necessary upgrades on the championship course and rectify irrigation damage from the previous year’s reclamation efforts. The original cart path, dating back to 1988, requires these enhancements to maintain both the championship and local 9-hole courses. The project received unanimous support from the council, with Hansen providing a competitive bid for the work.
The meeting also addressed a housing study professional services agreement with Redevelopment Resources LLC. The consultant was chosen to lead the city through the housing study process, which was legally reviewed and met with minimal comments from the council. This agreement was approved unanimously.
Further discussions delved into support for a new bridge crossing project spearheaded by Wright County. The council considered a letter of support for a BUILD grant application, intended to fund an environmental impact statement and preliminary design work for the bridge. Estimated at $2 to $3 million, the EIS costs prompted debate among council members, with some expressing skepticism about the proposed alternatives’ effectiveness in reducing traffic congestion. Despite these concerns, the council recognized the importance of the grant application in advancing infrastructure development.
The council also reviewed an agreement for strategic communications training for its members and staff, costing $7,350. This training aims to enhance communication skills through mock exercises and real-time scenario discussions. The funding is available within the participating departments, and the council approved the agreement without opposition.
During the meeting, the consent agenda passed smoothly, covering routine items such as payment of bills, approval of meeting minutes, and acceptance of donations. One member voiced dissatisfaction with the prolonged timeline of finalizing a labor agreement with the public works union, urging for expedited processes in future negotiations.
