- Meeting Overview:
The Bedminster Town Council recently convened to deliberate and pass several ordinances aimed at funding improvements across the township, including capital facility projects, public works equipment, and police department upgrades. Notably, the council allocated a substantial $354,990.72 for capital facility improvements.
The council introduced and discussed ordinance number 2024 007, which appropriates the aforementioned funds specifically for a roof project within the township. Notably, this project was initially quoted at a much higher price.
Continuing the theme of infrastructure, ordinance number 20249 authorized funding for the 2024 pavement management plan for the Bedminster Township Department of Public Works. The high cost of paving was a topic of discussion, with recognition of its importance to the township’s budgeting and planning efforts. Ordinance number 2024 010 authorized funding for various equipment for the Bedminster Fire Department, while ordinance number 2024 011 focused on funding for the Bedminster Township Police Department.
Further, the council discussed ordinance number 2024 012, which sought funding for equipment for the Bedminster Township Department of Public Works. The final ordinance, number 2024 014, allocated funds for engineering design improvements to several roads, clarifying that these funds were for the design phase and not for the actual construction improvements. A member of the public sought confirmation on this point, leading to an explanation of the rationale behind separating engineering and design costs from the actual construction expenses.
In addition to the funding ordinances, the council addressed the introduction of two other ordinances during the meeting. The second ordinance seeks to amend lot coverage standards for single-family residential uses, which could have implications for future residential development and land use within the community.
The council also took action on several resolutions. The appointment of Police Officer Jeffrey Vry to the position of Sergeant in the Bedminster Police Department was confirmed. Additionally, a resolution was passed authorizing an amended shared services agreement with the Borough of Far Hills for tax and utility collector office services.
Another resolution consented to the proposed Northeast upper Raritan and lower Raritan County water quality management plan Amendment. Furthermore, the township’s governing body reviewed the annual audit for 2023, with the final resolution authorizing the approval of the corrective action plan submitted by the Chief Financial Officer, which included a recommendation to monitor the animal control fund appropriation reserves more closely.
The council’s discussions extended beyond ordinances and resolutions, addressing community events and infrastructure projects. The council also discussed preparations for a municipal shred event in July, part of a larger initiative on document management and the annual destruction of Municipal records, emphasizing transparency and responsibility in municipal governance.
Addressing public safety and welfare, the council prepared for potential heat waves by identifying the Bedminster School Library as a cooling center. Additionally, the relaunch of the curb hunger program in Somerset County was discussed, with the council establishing a drop-off location for non-perishable food and personal hygiene items in the main lobby to combat food insecurities among county residents.
Infrastructure improvements were also on the agenda, with updates on the installation of fiber optics in neighborhoods and ongoing utility projects. A meeting with New Jersey American Water field operations personnel was highlighted, focusing on improving communication and coordinating construction projects. Furthermore, the Somerset Hills Public Safety Committee’s progress, including the adoption of a Public Safety ordinance by Bridgewater, was reviewed.
