- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Bedminster Town Council meeting, a range of topics were discussed, including the introduction of ordinances aimed at improving local infrastructure and preserving community resources. Among the most notable developments were plans for the Miller Lane Pump Station project, conservation of Hoopsick Farm, and acquisition of property for public recreational use.
A major highlight of the meeting was the introduction of ordinance number 2024 018, appropriating $1,470,000 for the much-anticipated Miller Lane Pump Station project. This project, set to go out to bid soon, will be funded by an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) grant.
Another ordinance introduced was number 2024 019, authorizing the acceptance of a conservation easement for Hoopsick Farm on Lamington Road. This initiative aims to preserve the agricultural character of the property and prevent any future subdivision. Nancy Dylan, the current beneficiary, intends to honor her mother’s wishes by maintaining the land’s scenic views and agricultural integrity. The council’s efforts in securing this conservation easement reflect a dedication to protecting Bedminster’s natural and historical landscapes.
The introduction of ordinance number 2024 022 marked a strategic move toward expanding public recreational spaces within the township. This ordinance authorizes the purchase of property at 255 and 261 Route 202/206 for $490,000, with plans to transform it into a community park. The proposed park, situated in a historic neighborhood linked to George Washington’s movements during the Revolutionary War, aims to provide a recreational area without additional taxpayer burden, utilizing open space fees instead.
In addition to these ordinances, the council introduced several others, including amendments to the alarm systems chapter with ordinance number 2024 016. This ordinance seeks to modernize the existing program, shifting from an annual registration fee to a one-time fee, thus streamlining the process and reducing administrative costs. Ordinance number 2024 020 proposes adjustments to the fee schedule for dog and cat licenses, aligning with current market conditions and rising animal control costs.
The council also reviewed resolution number 2024 128, which amends a previous resolution to allocate additional funds for professional tax appeal services. The surge in tax appeals has necessitated an increase in the budget from $15,000 to $29,000. Another resolution, number 2024 130, involves a telecommunications site lease agreement with New Jersey American Water Company, aimed at supporting local emergency services through a repeater shed agreement.
Beyond ordinances and resolutions, the meeting covered a variety of community events and initiatives. The Department of Public Works reported on completed installations and ongoing projects, including preparations for the upcoming leaf season and updates on engineering efforts. The council also highlighted the upcoming Fall Fest and Journey Through the Path event, both scheduled for October 12, with a rain date on October 13. These events promise to engage the community with a range of activities, from inflatables and petting zoos to performances by the Long Hill String Band.
Additionally, the police department reported on community engagement efforts, such as an essential needs drive for veterans and plans for a security presentation and senior barbecue.
