- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Belmar Borough Council meeting, the council addressed the community’s concerns about the Ocean Avenue Bridge’s deteriorating condition and the persistent geese problem plaguing local parks. These issues took center stage over other matters.
A resident’s concerns regarding the Ocean Avenue Bridge prompted discussions about its structural integrity. The bridge, a critical thoroughfare, was reported to have missing bumpers, deteriorating railings, and had been closed to boat traffic for three weeks. A council member provided assurance that a meeting with the county engineer about the bridge repairs had already taken place. Tentative repair work is scheduled from October to January, but there was no confirmed end date for the Main Street Bridge repairs, which raised concerns about potential impacts on the community. Council members stressed the importance of coordinating with the county to minimize inconvenience.
Another concern raised by residents was the geese problem, which has been an ongoing issue in the community. Residents expressed dissatisfaction with the current measures to manage the geese population, which included efforts like egg addling. One resident even detailed the use of a laser to deter the geese. The council discussed the challenges of managing the migratory geese and maintaining clean public spaces, recognizing the need for a more effective and comprehensive approach.
In other discussions, the council decided to reject sealed bids for facade work on the Belmar Housing Authority (BHA) buildings due to the high costs. The lowest bidder had withdrawn, necessitating a rebid process. The BHA also revealed it would receive $676,000 in federal appropriations for critical repairs to the senior building. Other maintenance plans for BHA properties included carpet cleaning, painting, vent cleaning, and security upgrades.
The council also proposed a five-minute speaking time for council representatives and reminded marina boat slip owners of the upcoming March 31st payment deadline to retain their slips. The council promoted the Friendly Sons of the Shillelagh annual Polar Bear Plunge and the mayor’s wellness campaign kickoff event on April 7th, which will feature a health fair.
The environmental focus continued with updates from the Belmar Environmental Commission, the Shade Tree Commission, and the Recreation Department. They reported on community initiatives like a Silver Lake cleanup, a clothing drive, and upcoming library events. Moreover, the council discussed the unsafe gazebo at Silver Lake, with plans to repair it before the seafood festival.
Residents also raised other concerns, including the “filthy” state of the water tower and the need for its cleaning and painting. The pickleball courts at Mel Park were criticized for their sun-facing layout, affecting players’ visibility. Suggestions were made to reorient the courts to mitigate the issue.
The council recognized local sports achievements, honoring St. Rose High School’s basketball team and shotput champion Joshua Heisman with resolutions. The meeting commenced with a moment of silence for troops, first responders, longtime resident Matt Sharon, and victims of the Maryland B Bridge crash. A town hall meeting to discuss a lawsuit against Verizon involving Belmar residents was announced as well.
