Belmar Library Board Considers Extending Hours, Boosting Community Engagement
- Meeting Overview:
The latest meeting of the Belmar Library Board of Trustees encompassed a variety of discussions, with notable topics including potential changes to the library’s operating hours, the establishment and funding of after-school clubs, and issues with the library’s window installation. The board also focused on community engagement through upcoming events and programs.
The issue that garnered considerable attention was the proposal to amend library hours. The trustees deliberated on the possibility of extending Friday operating hours from the current 9 am to 2 pm closure to a 5 pm closure. Additional changes to other days’ hours were also under consideration. Discussions revealed differing viewpoints among board members, some expressing concerns about the impact on staff and the type of patronage during non-standard hours. The lack of comprehensive data on patronage during these proposed extended hours was a sticking point, necessitating more research before finalizing any changes.
Another subject was the establishment and sustenance of after-school clubs, specifically a fishing club and an Esports club. Both clubs were noted for their inclusivity and educational value. The board considered logistic aspects of integrating these clubs into the library’s offerings, as well as the potential expansion to include other schools or community members. The financial implications were debated, with proposals for a budget of $2,500 for each club being discussed alongside concerns about the logistics and the need for data to guide future decisions.
The meeting also revealed problems with the installation of new windows at the library. The completion of the back windows marked progress, but the large windows faced a setback due to measurement issues, necessitating a remake and an estimated two-month delay. The window installation was part of the library’s infrastructure updates, vital for the maintenance of the historic institution.
Community engagement was a recurring theme of the meeting, manifesting in various upcoming events and programs. These included a successful watch drive for the homeless, which collected approximately 180 timepieces, and author events featuring local personalities such as Lucille Melina. A special event on June 18th at Taylor Pavilion was highlighted, featuring the John Lille Orchestra and a discussion on the history of Juneteenth. Additionally, the board mentioned plans for Adult and Children’s Book Fairs in October and a series of holiday events for Diwali, Halloween, and Christmas.
The trustees discussed potential amendments to local ordinances to accommodate the hosting of library concerts, which could potentially conflict with existing noise level regulations. The board sought advice from the town attorney and the chief of police on how to reconcile these activities with the law, even considering an ordinance amendment to align with state statutes.
The strategic plan was discussed as well, with emphasis on outreach efforts to the Hispanic community and the rescheduling of programs affected by unforeseen events. Notably, the board considered shared service agreements with local schools to support extracurricular activities, including the mentioned clubs and events for Hispanic Heritage Month.
Lastly, the memorial bush for Mrs. Gallagher and the condition of a cherry tree were topics of updates. The board also touched on the distribution of the watches from the drive.
