- Meeting Overview:
The Benton County Board of Commissioners meeting involved the adoption of a proclamation recognizing “4-H Week” and the approval of a comprehensive five-year Road and Bridge construction plan.
One of the standout moments of the meeting was the unanimous approval of a proclamation designating October 6 to 12, 2024, as “4-H Week” in Benton County. The commissioners highlighted the organization’s impact on youth development, noting that 4-H is America’s largest youth development organization, supporting nearly six million youths nationwide and helping 409 young people in Benton County last year alone. The proclamation emphasized 4-H’s role in providing hands-on learning experiences in areas such as health, science, agriculture, and citizenship. Commissioners expressed their appreciation for 4-H’s activities and the importance of early engagement in youth programs.
For instance, Emma Cashm, a vice president in her club, shared how her involvement in showing cattle has not only enhanced her skills but also strengthened her family bonds. Ry Lion, president of the M Lakers 4 club, spoke about the leadership and public speaking skills he gained through 4-H. These personal stories highlighted the inclusivity and diverse opportunities offered by 4-H, making it accessible to youths regardless of whether they own livestock.
In addition to the 4-H Week proclamation, the commissioners tackled an extensive five-year Road and Bridge construction plan. The plan, which includes significant projects slated for completion by 2029, aims to address the county’s growing infrastructure needs. Key projects include the mill and overlay of Norman Avenue in Foley and the reconstruction of County Road 80, which involves a bridge replacement over Mayew Creek. The road plan outlines an investment of over $50 million in the next five years, covering improvements to 82.5 miles of roadway and the replacement of five bridges, with substantial funding from federal and state grants.
During the discussion, concerns were raised about the prioritization of County Road 50, which is seen as critical for managing increased traffic. The commissioners suggested paving a less costly gravel road to meet obligations tied to a sales tax referendum. The conversation emphasized the importance of maintaining communication with a lobbyist to secure additional federal funding for these road projects.
The board also approved a motion to hold a public hearing to discuss the paving of gravel roads and maintenance needs within the next year. This decision aims to gather community input and ensure transparency in the county’s infrastructure planning process.
Another agenda item was the introduction of Joy Johnson Lind as the new Human Services Director. Joy expressed her enthusiasm for joining the Benton County leadership team and shared her background and family ties to the area. The appointment underscored the county’s focus on community engagement and leadership development.
In addressing employee engagement, the county administrator reported on ongoing leadership training for supervisors and a culture team. The feedback from these training sessions has been positive, and discussions are underway to potentially extend support from the facilitator to sustain engagement and leadership within the team.
The meeting also included an update on the River Project, which highlighted the completion of most components except for a shelter delayed due to a fire at the manufacturing facility. The administrator mentioned that the trails now connect previously isolated areas, creating continuous loops and enhancing the recreational experience for visitors.
Additionally, the board discussed the reconstruction of Fairy Point Road, which now includes a small shoulder and touchdown points, improving trail connectivity across Prairie and Highway 55. The Natural Area playground at The Farmstead was also a topic of discussion, with its unique design incorporating natural materials like rocks, boulders, and logs. Safety inspections confirmed the playground’s design, and plans are in place for constructing a shelter with amenities such as a fire pit and barbecue grills.
The meeting concluded with commissioner updates on recent activities, including budget meetings and engagements with various committees. They also discussed upcoming events like the AMC annual conference and an Industry Innovators Forum, aimed at launching a new talent attraction campaign.
