The challenge requires schools to collect and recycle a minimum of 1,000 pounds of plastic film, incentivized by funds for environmental projects and a bench made of recycled plastic. Claire reported that the Green Team had already collected over 400 pounds of plastic, partnering with five local businesses and establishing three drop-off hubs in town. She proposed to further engage the community by including notifications on the school district’s website and in communications to families.

Dr. Brian Brotschul expressed gratitude for Claire’s presentation and mentioned that the Green Team’s initiatives would be forwarded to the Facilities and Operations Committee for potential collaboration.

Dr. Brotschul also reviewed the successful preparation for the upcoming school year, which included the introduction of a new webmaster and the engagement of staff in professional development courses. The cheerleading squad’s preseason work and an administrative retreat for leadership training were highlighted as part of the summer activities. Additionally, new staff appointments, including an interim assistant principal at the middle school, were announced.

The meeting recognized Finn Spary, a recent graduate named to the United Soccer Coaches High School Scholar All-America team. This prestigious honor was a first for a Bernards High School athlete, and Finn was commended for his humility and strong work ethic.

Infrastructure improvements were another focal point. The board discussed remediation plans for the lower fields at Bernards High School, which have faced drainage issues due to a clay layer beneath the grass. An engineering firm proposed an underground drainage system designed to function like a French drain. The Facilities and Operations Committee is expected to finalize trench specifications and commence bidding for the project, with hopes of completing it before the ground freezes in early 2024.

The board also reviewed academic goals established in a June workshop. These goals include initiatives to reduce achievement gaps, enhance support for academic subgroups, and expand dual enrollment and Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses. Planning for STEM Robotics and the CTE curriculum and developing a long-range facility plan were also prioritized. Enhancing community engagement, especially with members without school-aged children, was another key objective.

The transition from Power School to Genesis was announced, affecting parents and students. Information about the new portal has been sent to parents, with a training session scheduled. A dedicated support line has been established for inquiries related to the transition.

Personnel matters included welcoming a new assistant principal at Bernards Middle School and proposing a restructuring to combine the director of facilities and transportation coordinator roles into a new director of operations position. This move aims to streamline responsibilities and maintain consistency within the district.

Policy discussions covered the completed light study for facility use and the necessity of a drone use policy following a request to film graduation. The board also updated the substance abuse policy to reflect current realities in schools, promoting a supportive rather than punitive approach. Concerns were raised about overly severe consequences potentially hindering student engagement, particularly regarding vaping issues.

The meeting concluded with discussions on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) process, recognizing the challenges lower-income families face in completing the forms. The importance of having income tax documents ready and the implications of low completion rates were emphasized. The board noted that filling out the FAFSA is not mandatory, which may lead to a lack of awareness among families.
