Bernards Township Celebrates Decades of Service by Firefighter Mike Delgado
- Meeting Overview:
The Bernards Township Committee meeting on December 9, 2025, focused on recognizing the remarkable service of community members, with special emphasis on Mike Delgado’s 50-year tenure with the Basking Ridge Fire Company Number One. The evening was marked by a series of commendations and messages of gratitude.
Mike Delgado’s half-century of service was a notable item of discussion. The committee, alongside various officials, celebrated his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the community. The Somerset County Board of County Commissioners presented formal recognition, praising Delgado for his significant roles within the fire company, from third captain to fire chief. Delgado’s professionalism and courage were repeatedly highlighted, as was his mentorship of countless firefighters over the years. His contributions extended beyond emergency response, as he also helped maintain community traditions, such as placing the holiday tree annually.
A representative from Congressman Tom Kaine’s office further honored Delgado, presenting a certificate of special congressional recognition and a flag flown over the United States Capitol. The Governor of New Jersey also sent a letter, read aloud during the meeting, commending Delgado for embodying the spirit of volunteerism and community commitment. The letter emphasized his readiness and courage, stating that his decades of service exemplified the highest ideals of volunteer service.
Delgado, in his response, expressed gratitude for the recognition and underscored the importance of teamwork and community support in the fire service. His remarks echoed the theme of collaboration and dedication that ran throughout the evening’s tributes. The committee members expressed that it is increasingly rare to find individuals who commit themselves to serving year after year, decade after decade, making Delgado’s service particularly noteworthy.
Another acknowledgment was Resolution 2025-0413, celebrating the achievements of the St. James School cross country team, who were state champions in 2025. The Deputy Mayor and committee members expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments. The team’s success was attributed to dedication, teamwork, and community support, with special recognition given to Coaches Matthew Weisman and Linda Johnson. A team athlete addressed the committee, reflecting on their rigorous training regimen and expressing pride in the team’s achievements and future prospects in high school running.
Resolution 2025-0417 recognized Timothy Ober for his service on the Golf Advisory Committee since 2017. The committee expressed appreciation for his leadership and stewardship of the golf course, emphasizing the value of community members who dedicate their time to local governance. Although Ober was not present to receive the recognition, plans were made to honor him at a later date.
Similarly, the committee honored Charles Counan for his extensive service on the Parks, Pathways, and Recreation Advisory Committee from 2010 to 2025. His fifteen years of dedication were celebrated, with committee members emphasizing how his reliability and commitment had enriched public spaces for community enjoyment.
Eric Price was recognized for his four years of service on the same committee, with the council acknowledging his contributions to fostering community connections through family-friendly spaces. Price expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and praised his colleagues for their dedication to enhancing recreational opportunities.
The meeting also featured public comments, where residents raised concerns about local infrastructure and safety issues. An individual from Basking Ridge highlighted ongoing safety problems on Ellen Road, while another resident from Vandervir Drive brought attention to the conditions of Douglas Road, advocating for transparency around police reports.
In addition to individual recognitions, the meeting addressed several community initiatives. The Parks and Recreation department reminded residents of deadlines for purchasing commemorative benches, and a health department survey aimed at gathering local health data was discussed. The meeting concluded with acknowledgments of retiring staff and promotions within the township, alongside discussions about future plans for Allen Road and potential collaborations with neighboring municipalities.
