Bernards Township Celebrates Italian Heritage Month and Honors First Responders
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Bernards Town Council meeting on October 28, 2025, the council unanimously passed a resolution recognizing October as Italian Heritage Month, celebrating the contributions of Italian-Americans to the local community. The meeting also highlighted the 115th anniversary of the Liberty Corner Fire Company, acknowledging the dedication and service of first responders.
Resolution 2025-362, which celebrated Italian Heritage Month, was a focal point of the meeting. It aimed to honor the contributions of Italian-Americans, tracing their migration to the United States since 1880, and underscoring their impact in various fields such as the arts and education. The resolution also recognized the local chapter of UNICO National, a service organization that promotes Italian-American heritage and has been active in community efforts, including a fundraising event for the local food bank. Members of the council shared personal connections to Italian heritage, expressing pride in their legacy and the cultural richness it brings to the township. A representative from UNICO, Nick Kuso, accepted the proclamation, sharing his family’s immigration story from Sicily and expressing gratitude for the recognition. The council’s unanimous vote demonstrated strong support for the resolution and the township’s appreciation for Italian-American culture.
In another significant agenda item, the council celebrated the 115th anniversary of the Liberty Corner Fire Company, coinciding with National First Responders Day. This milestone recognized the courage, professionalism, and compassion of the men and women serving as first responders in Bernards Township. Members of the council expressed their appreciation for the volunteers and sponsors who contributed to the success of the appreciation night. The leadership of Jean Zo in organizing the event was particularly commended for fostering community unity and celebration.
The council also discussed ongoing and future initiatives. Among these was the Field of Honor display, inviting donations to sponsor flags honoring veterans, with proceeds supporting programs at the Lions VA campus for homeless and disabled veterans. A dedication ceremony for this initiative is scheduled for November 2nd at town hall. Additionally, the township announced the opening of participant registration for the ski and board club, targeting residents in grades six through eight, with planned trips to the Shauny Mountain Ski Area.
Environmental sustainability efforts were addressed with the announcement of a new pumpkin recycling initiative, replacing the previous pumpkin smash event. Clean pumpkins can be dropped off for composting from November 8th to 22nd at English Farm, promoting proper waste management.
Economic development was another key topic, with discussions about a recent meeting with Somerset County officials. The council expressed optimism about fostering economic growth through collaborations and resources made available to the township.
The meeting also addressed preparations for the township’s 250th anniversary in 2026, emphasizing plans for a series of events highlighting local historical significance, particularly the capture of General Charles Lee. The council underscored the importance of community involvement and excitement for the anniversary celebrations.
Concerns about a potential federal government shutdown impacting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) were raised, noting that 40 residents in Bernards Township rely on this assistance. The council encouraged community support for local food pantries in anticipation of increased need as the November 1st deadline approaches for SNAP availability.
The council also recognized local candidates running for office, commending their dedication to public service and acknowledging the challenges of campaigning. The council expressed gratitude for the efforts of all those involved in the electoral process.
