- Meeting Overview:
The Bernards Township Council meeting on September 24, 2024, covered a range of topics, from police promotions and community projects to recognizing local schools’ achievements and upcoming events. Notably, the council congratulated the police department on recent promotions and St. James School for receiving the 2024 Blue Ribbon award.
During the meeting, the council acknowledged the promotions within the police department, celebrating the advancements of Corporal Zanowski, Sergeant Neri, Lieutenant McKnight, and Deputy Chief King. These officers have dedicated between 16 to 25 years of service to the community. Committee members expressed their congratulations and gratitude, highlighting the officers’ long-standing commitment to the safety and security of Bernards Township.
Another moment was the recognition of St. James School’s achievement in receiving the 2024 Blue Ribbon award from the U.S. Department of Education. This prestigious award, which schools can only qualify for once every five years, was awarded to only 11 schools in the state this year. The council congratulated St. James School for this accomplishment, emphasizing the dedication and hard work of the students and staff.
The council also discussed various community initiatives. The Environmental Commission announced plans to start a Wildflower Meadow project in October. This project will repurpose a currently mowed area next to the engineering building and involve collaboration with the Department of Public Works and local experts. The Shade Tree Commission plans to plant ten replacement trees in various parks and seven Memorial trees through a program offered by the Parks and Recreation Department.
Hispanic Heritage Month was highlighted, with the council celebrating the contributions of American citizens with Hispanic ancestry. The council mentioned a diversity festival scheduled in Somerville, featuring cultural exhibits and performances, as part of the month’s celebrations.
The council also introduced several upcoming community events. Jen Gander from the Parks and Recreation Department announced the initiation of a Middle School Ski and Board program for seventh and eighth graders, with details available on the department’s website. The Mayor promoted the Mayor’s Fall Festival on October 5, which includes a 5K run. The last day for discount registration is the day of the festival. Additionally, a town-wide food drive in collaboration with the Bernards Regional Business Alliance will run from October 27 to November 17, targeting specific items to support local food pantries.
Concerns about electric outages in Bernards Township were addressed, with JCP&L completing a reliability investigation. The second edition of the Bernards Buzz was introduced, summarizing township activities from May to August, to keep residents informed about events and services.
In new business, the council introduced Ordinance 2566, which involves accepting a Wetlands conservation easement on property located on Liberty Corner Road. The public hearing for this ordinance was opened and closed without comments, and the ordinance was adopted unanimously through a roll call vote.
The council also approved a special event permit for the “Run with Me” 5K scheduled for October 5, 2024, organized by the Parents of Exceptional Children. The Mayor expressed appreciation for the event, noting that all proceeds would support Our House, a nonprofit focused on housing solutions for adults with special needs. The efforts of the organizers were recognized, and community participation was encouraged.
The meeting included reflections on past community outreach efforts, such as the mailing of pedestrian and bicycle maps to residents two decades ago and the evolution of such resources with the advent of GPS technology. This nostalgic recollection prompted light-hearted conversation among the members.
Lastly, the council acknowledged the September 11th ceremony held earlier in the month, expressing gratitude to those involved in organizing the event, particularly highlighting the contributions of local clergy and a minister who had previously served as a first responder.
