Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee Discusses School Building Project and Water System Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
The Blackstone-Millville Regional School Committee convened recently to address developments within the district, including ongoing efforts for a new school building project and issues related to the water system in school facilities. The meeting illuminated a range of topics from infrastructure upgrades to student achievements.
The school building project was a central topic of discussion, with visual aids presented to provide clarity on the planned developments. Key elements of the project include the construction of an all-purpose field suitable for soccer and other activities, as well as retaining the existing girls’ softball field and football field in their current locations. However, concerns about limited parking during events were raised, prompting the committee to consider additional parking spaces to alleviate the issue, given the restricted access to the field area.
The committee also deliberated on the potential addition of a new building section to house locker rooms closer to the football field, alongside restrooms and a snack shack, which would enhance the support facilities available. Design choices for the building’s entrance were debated, with a preference expressed for a more welcoming curvy design over a square one. This entrance is considered a critical area due to its proximity to administrative offices and the cafeteria. Aspects of landscaping, including tree selection to prevent excessive growth, were also discussed.
Community engagement remains a priority, with several upcoming events planned to present project updates and gather public input. These include a presentation at the Millville Senior Center and participation in meetings with the Blackstone Board of Selectmen. Events at the schools, such as a family dance and a movie night, are also scheduled, with committee members encouraged to attend to address community inquiries and distribute informational materials.
An unexpected topic of interest was the fate of a large rock located on the construction site, humorously referred to as “the elephant in the room.” The committee discussed whether it would be removed or incorporated into the building’s design, with ideas floated about using pieces of the rock as a fundraiser if it were blasted. Safety concerns regarding the rock’s proximity to the building were noted, prompting considerations on how to grade the area around drop-off zones.
The meeting also addressed the essential issue of water quality within the district. Approximately 78,000 gallons of water have been processed through a new system, but ongoing monitoring and testing by the Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection remain necessary. The committee discussed the provision of bottled water for the upcoming school year, with a commitment to further investigate budget implications.
The superintendent provided an update on the generator situation, noting that the school was nearing its $25,000 responsibility for renting the current generator due to the malfunction of the existing one. Millville’s evaluation of the generator had yet to yield decisions about replacement or repair, necessitating further updates as rental costs approached the district’s financial limits.
Additionally, a report on the Student Opportunity Act highlighted the district’s progress in implementing evidence-based practices to improve student outcomes, particularly in foundational reading skills and writing performance. While progress has been noted, the need for continued support, especially for students with disabilities and English language learners, was acknowledged.
The committee also reviewed a range of donations, including $1,000 for the Scholastic Book Fair at the middle school and contributions from local businesses totaling over $4,000. These donations were unanimously accepted, reflecting community support for educational initiatives.
Maintenance issues were another focus, with updates on the replacement of a heating coil, repairs to a damaged loading dock railing, and efforts to address flooding at the Millville site. A leaking sprinkler pipe in the boiler room, initially scheduled for repair during April vacation, was postponed until June due to service provider overbooking. Furthermore, the committee planned to address what appeared to be mold on the back of a building, later identified as lichen, with pressure washing scheduled.
As the meeting drew to a close, the committee celebrated student achievements, including the recent Eagle Scout accomplishment by Kevin Burgess and the gold award won by the sixth and seventh-grade band.
