- Meeting Overview:
The Bloomingdale Borough Council convened to discuss various issues, with the most focus on approving a shared service agreement aimed at enhancing emergency communication systems in local schools. The agreement involves installing a repeater to improve the radio communication system for the police and fire departments within school buildings, addressing critical communication dead spots.
A non-agenda item introduced during the meeting brought forth this resolution, which was quickly acknowledged as essential for the safety of students and staff. The council discussed the importance of this agreement, especially for first responders, and highlighted the significant investment made in communication systems. The need for a formal agreement had been underscored, as previously, no such formal arrangement existed regarding the housing of emergency equipment on school property. This agreement also includes provisions for repair responsibilities if any damage occurs to school property during the installation or maintenance of the repeater.
In other business, the council addressed ongoing community projects and activities. One notable update came from a council member who reported the completion of a project on the culverts on Vanam Street. Advanced Plumbing took charge of cleaning out the culverts, which had been problematic during heavy rains. Despite concerns about potential damage to underground utilities, the recent work had noticeably alleviated flooding issues in the area. The member described a recent rainstorm that dropped two and a half to three inches of rain in a short period, noting the effectiveness of the culvert improvements. The council emphasized the responsibility of residents to maintain the areas behind their properties, as these sections do not fall under borough ownership.
The council also discussed the Economic Development Committee, expressing gratitude to Matt Redfield for his contributions as he stepped down due to work commitments. Justin Hill was appointed to a search and rescue team, recognized for his qualifications as an EMT and his roles within the fire department.
Library initiatives were another focal point of the meeting. The mayor highlighted September as library card sign-up month, encouraging community members to register. The library’s upcoming events included a free “Make a Will” event for seniors over 60 and veterans, scheduled for September 13th at St. Luke Baptist Church in Paterson. This service had previously garnered significant interest in Bloomingdale. Other notable activities included a Stephen King book club meeting and a “Paint and Sip” event set for November 3rd.
Youth and community events also featured prominently. The Bloomingdale Butler Youth Club was reported to be participating in tag day events, with the season’s first game scheduled for an upcoming Saturday. Fundraising efforts included a calendar raffle and events such as a “Dine to Donate” initiative and a paint fusion art event slated for October 17th.
The council also adopted a resolution for stormwater mapping services, an update required to meet municipal stormwater management obligations. The mapping, last completed in 2013, will cost the borough a net amount of $4,000 after grants. This service is deemed essential to address areas needing attention.
Community recognition events were highlighted, with a reminder about an upcoming event on September 8th at the fire hall to honor Gail LEL 3M for her contributions to the local community. The mayor extended an invitation to all first responders and council members to a picnic at Glen Wild Lake, emphasizing the importance of such recognition.
During the meeting, a council member highlighted a proclamation related to prostate and ovarian cancer awareness. Sharing a personal experience as a prostate cancer survivor, the member stressed the significance of early detection. The proclamation also recognized a local supplier’s sister, an ovarian cancer survivor, providing context for the awareness efforts.
The beginning of the school year was acknowledged, with commendations for the police and school officials for their efficient management of traffic during the first day. The council discussed ongoing projects, including grass repair at local parks and the nearly complete gazebo, which will soon host community gatherings once minor gutter work is finalized. Coordination with the senior center was emphasized to ensure their activities are not disrupted by events scheduled at the gazebo.
