- Meeting Overview:
The Boonton Township School Board meeting addressed maintenance issues, financial plans, and personnel changes in preparation for the upcoming school year. Key topics included the discovery of new roof leaks, the status of maintenance projects, and the approval of extraordinary aid funding.
The meeting began with an administrative report detailing preparations for the new school year. The report highlighted that all classrooms had been cleaned and setup, with offices and most hallways also waxed and shampooed. However, the discovery of new roof leaks during recent heavy rainfall raised concerns. Maintenance staff conducted early morning inspections, promptly notifying the roofing contractor to address the issues. A board member inquired if the leaks were in sections that had not been renovated, revealing that about a third of the roof work was still outstanding. This led to further discussion on the adequacy of past repairs.
The administrative report also mentioned that preventive maintenance projects, including painting and HVAC repairs, had been completed. However, corroded HVAC piping was being repaired. School supplies had been delivered, and auditors had completed their fieldwork, with the district reported to be in excellent financial shape. The audit, pending state pension information, was expected to be finalized around October.
Dr. Rosanne Humphrey, the interim superintendent, presented her report, emphasizing her positive interactions with new staff and the administrative team. She discussed the recruitment process for the special education director position, noting that the first candidate offered the role had declined. The second candidate, despite having less experience, was impressive and accepted the position, starting on September 1st. Out of 16 applicants, six were deemed unqualified, and the hiring process involved multiple interviews and good communication with applicants.
In terms of financial matters, the board discussed extraordinary aid to fund students with high needs. The mechanisms for receiving and allocating these funds were examined, focusing on unexpected maintenance projects and technological needs such as Chromebooks. A motion to adopt the financial plan received unanimous support from board members present.
The meeting also included acknowledgments for various contributions within the school community. A donor named Christopher was recognized for loaning an instrument to the music program, aiding students who might struggle to obtain their own instruments. Retiring administrative assistant Mary, who had served since 1998, and Dr. Lee Londes, who had provided service for 13 years, were both praised for their contributions to the district. The board expressed a commitment to acknowledge the efforts of staff members who contribute to student success and school readiness.
A resident named Marta Pascarella inquired about the readiness of school grounds for the opening of the school year. She confirmed that Bedar, the contracted landscaping service, was handling weeding and trimming. Pascarella specifically asked about mulching, referring to an unattractive fungus known colloquially as “dog vomit” that had appeared.
The meeting also included reports from various educational bodies. The Mountain Lakes Board of Education had not convened since the previous meeting, apart from a brief session to approve new hires. Orientation for former eighth-grade students was scheduled for the following morning at the high school, with the first football game set for the upcoming Friday and classes beginning on the 20th. The New Jersey School Boards Association was set to meet in early October, while the Educational Services Commission of Morris County had recently met to discuss routine business.
The groundbreaking ceremony for the municipal building and police headquarters was announced, scheduled for August 28th. Municipal offices and the police department would temporarily relocate to modular offices starting August 30th, with assurances that services would remain uninterrupted.
Plans for a Family Fun Night were also announced, set for September 6th, featuring food, a DJ, and bounce houses. The board encouraged community participation.
Personnel motions were passed without objection, and updates from the policy committee included job descriptions for combined roles such as superintendent and principal.
As the meeting neared its conclusion, a second public comment period allowed a member to express gratitude towards the BTDA for organizing a welcome picnic for a new member. Appreciation was extended to an individual named L for her leadership and contributions over the summer, with a gesture of thanks planned in recognition of her efforts.
