Boston Cannabis Board Defers Decision on Prolific Cannabis’s Late-Night Hours Proposal
- Meeting Overview:
During a virtual meeting on July 16, 2025, the Boston Cannabis Board (BCB) tackled issues, including Prolific Cannabis’s request to extend its operating hours to 1:00 a.m. The board deferred the decision, seeking further community engagement and security assessments, while also approving a change of ownership for Castle Leaf LLC.
The meeting’s most engaging discussion revolved around Prolific Cannabis’s proposal to extend its operating hours from the current 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. to a new schedule of 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. CEO Eric Lawrence and acting General Manager Maya Gaul made a case for the change, highlighting the business’s location in an entertainment district and its alignment with Boston’s broader nightlife initiatives. Lawrence explained that their business faced high demand before closing time and emphasized the need to adapt rapidly in a competitive cannabis market. He noted that Prolific Cannabis employs 12 people, eight of whom are local to the Alston area, and argued that extended hours would help sustain economic viability.
Board members engaged with Lawrence, expressing both curiosity and concern. Chairwoman Kathleen Joyce questioned whether the three-month operational period was sufficient to warrant such a change. Lawrence acknowledged this concern, citing the fast-paced nature of the cannabis industry as a driver for their request. He also detailed their community outreach efforts, which included meetings and flyer distribution, and reported support from the Alston Civic Association, despite no recorded opposition.
Commissioner Gandhi raised the issue of double parking on Harvard Avenue, a known problem area exacerbated by delivery drivers. The representatives acknowledged ongoing challenges but mentioned that their security personnel monitored the situation. Commissioner Gandhi also expressed concern about setting a precedent for other businesses to seek similar extensions. Lawrence countered that their establishment’s unique position in an entertainment district would limit such implications.
During public testimony, Tony Doddoro, president of the Austin Civic Association, highlighted Prolific Cannabis’s accessibility and involvement in community events but echoed concerns about parking and the potential for increased criminal activity. Alex Cornini of Austin Village Main Streets supported the proposal, emphasizing the importance of nightlife to the local economy and commending Prolific Cannabis for its community integration.
Despite the mixed feedback, the board ultimately voted to defer the proposal to its next meeting in August. Chairwoman Joyce emphasized the need for additional input from local officials and a thorough assessment of security measures. She underscored the importance of community awareness and suggested that further dialogue could better address safety concerns.
Following the Prolific Cannabis discussion, the board addressed a request from Castle Leaf LLC for a change of ownership. Glenn Frank represented Castle Leaf, confirming the transfer of membership interests to Green Brighton LLC, which had received approval from the Cannabis Control Commission. The board had no questions and unanimously approved the request.
