Boston Cannabis Board Greenlights New Model for Small-Scale Dispensary in Dorchester
- Meeting Overview:
In its recent meeting, the Boston Cannabis Board approved multiple license adjustments, notably endorsing an innovative small-scale dispensary model in Dorchester. The board approved a marijuana retailer license for Josh’s Onetop LLC, despite a buffer zone conflict, highlighting the business’s unique model and its potential to set a precedent for small-scale cannabis operations in the city. The meeting also saw the approval of extended operating hours for two other dispensaries.
Josh’s Onetop LLC’s application was a focal point due to its distinctive approach of integrating a marijuana dispensary within an existing bodega. With the retail space being only 400 square feet, board members debated its feasibility and potential impact. The applicant, an equity business owner with a background in retailing products restricted to individuals over 18, aims to diversify his existing business by adding cannabis products. Board members expressed cautious optimism, appreciating the applicant’s ties to the community and his innovative business model. Concerns were raised regarding the logistics of accessing the dispensary through the bodega and ensuring adequate security. However, the board members recognized the model’s potential to provide a blueprint for the efficient use of smaller retail spaces.
Earlier in the meeting, the board unanimously approved requests for extended operating hours from EVG Farms LLC, doing business as Firehouse, and Union Twist Inc., now operating under the name Duchess Cannabis. EVG Farms LLC, located in Hyde Park, extended its closing time from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m., aligning with the operational hours of surrounding businesses. Similarly, Union Twist Inc., situated in Allston, adjusted its hours to open an hour earlier and close later, providing additional work hours for employees and aligning with local business operations.
The board also approved a change in beneficial interest for Z Boutique LLC, describing it as an administrative cleanup. Lastly, in old and new business, Chair Kathleen Joyce provided an update on the Boston cannabis retail license saturation study, which the board is scrutinizing to ensure the sustainable growth of cannabis businesses in the city. The board plans to seek further clarification and data to enhance the study, considering factors like tourism, commuter impacts, and neighborhood cost differences.
