The Boston Planning and Development Board meeting centered around a celebration of local high school valedictorians. The event, attended by significant city officials and educators, underscored the achievements of students from multiple backgrounds as they prepare to embark on their college journeys.
18:38A key highlight of the meeting was the recognition of two students, Higall Landerto and Alex Young Heal, who were among the first cohort to complete the International Baccalaureate programs in Boston public schools. This achievement was noted as a landmark moment for the district. The establishment of the first National Honor Society chapter at Boston International was also celebrated.
28:02These students’ stories highlighted their resilience and determination, attributes that were celebrated throughout the ceremony. For instance, Nicholas Cathkart, a champion debater from Brighton High School, will attend Brown University on a full academic scholarship, while Shantelli Jones is set to join Boston College after navigating various Boston public schools.
The meeting also featured a notable speech from Casy Cabrera, valedictorian of Boston International High School, who shared her journey from the Dominican Republic to Boston. Cabrera spoke candidly about overcoming language barriers and adapting to a new educational environment, crediting her perseverance and the unwavering support of her teachers for her success. She reflected on her experiences, including an internship at Bank of America and community service projects, emphasizing the value of education in overcoming adversity.
Throughout the event, the mayor and the superintendent, along with other city officials, took the opportunity to commend the students’ achievements and the collaborative efforts of families, educators, and community partners in supporting them. The ceremony recognized numerous valedictorians, each with unique aspirations and backgrounds, such as Jeanie Lantern, who will attend Wentworth Institute of Technology, and Justin St. Cloud, who plans to pursue a career in law enforcement at Roxbury Community College.
In addition to individual recognitions, the ceremony emphasized the educational strides made within the district, including increasing graduation rates and the transformation of schools like Clap Elementary into innovation schools. These efforts were attributed to the leadership within the high school office and the dedication of educators, spotlighting figures like Dr. Linda Cabraw, the academic superintendent for high schools, for their commitment to student success.
