The project also aims to improve pedestrian safety and accessibility by widening sidewalks on Magazine and Kembell Streets, addressing existing pinch points. These improvements will also include dark sky compliant lighting and additional security measures, creating a safer and more inviting environment for residents and visitors.

Technical aspects of the project were detailed by Doug Hottman from High Point Engineering, who discussed the importance of sidewalk widening facilitated by a pedestrian easement. This easement will allow for the reconstruction of sidewalks and closure of unnecessary curb cuts. The proposal also includes a projection license for facade improvements and the abandonment of Farman Street, which is considered obsolete under the new plan.

The commission’s discussion with the project team addressed compliance with accessibility standards, particularly concerning a reciprocal ramp at the intersection of Allerton and Magazine Streets. The team committed to ensuring the ramp meets the disabilities commission’s requirements if necessary.

Meanwhile, another significant agenda item involved a petition from Eversource Electric for a location grant on Hawkins Street. Project manager Samantha Ramos elaborated on the necessity of installing an anode bed for corrosion protection related to the power line from the Mystic Bulk Power Station. While the project will temporarily impact parking, with a street closure lasting no more than three days, Ramos assured the commission that normal conditions would be restored promptly post-construction.

Further discussions centered around GVW Incorporated’s proposal for sidewalk and curb improvements in East Boston. The project, which involves the reconstruction of sidewalks and curb ramps, granite curb realignment, and landscaping for a mixed-use development, aims to enhance pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure. Civil engineer Craig March presented detailed visual plans, highlighting a reduction in curb openings and improvements to bicycle parking and landscaping. A concern was raised regarding the connectivity to a nearby MBTA bridge, with the project team acknowledging the need to work within the existing licensing framework.

Additionally, the commission considered a pedestrian easement and specific repairs plan on Farragate Road, linked to a proposed 21-unit residential development. Attorney George Morancey and project engineer Len Buffar discussed improvements required by the BPDA, including a raised crossing on East Second Street. The commission set a follow-up date to review revised plans.
