Boston Disability Commission Advisory Board: MBTA Announces Accessibility Upgrades with New Fare Gates and Station Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Disability Commission Advisory Board meeting focused on advancements in public transportation accessibility, emphasizing the MBTA’s ongoing projects to enhance convenience and safety for individuals with disabilities. Key initiatives include the introduction of automatic fare gates and extensive station upgrades, allowing for more accessible travel throughout the city.
The meeting’s centerpiece was a comprehensive presentation from the MBTA’s Office of Systemwide Accessibility, detailing recent and upcoming improvements across the transit system. Notably, the MBTA has upgraded over 400 bus stops in the past four years, with plans for additional enhancements. These upgrades are supported by a $15 million funding allocation intended for new bus shelters at 100 more locations, focusing on ensuring accessible paths to these stops. A significant innovation discussed was the use of bus-mounted cameras to issue tickets to vehicles illegally parked in bus lanes, an initiative aimed at reducing access obstructions.
Attention was also given to station renovations, with updates shared about Chelsea Station’s fully accessible platforms and ongoing projects on the Green Line’s B and C branches. The C branch construction is slated to begin in October, followed by the B branch. Additionally, Symphony Station will see improvements, including redundant elevators and accessible platforms. The introduction of new low-floor Green Line trolleys, expected to arrive in the spring, promises to enable level boarding at stations, aligning with practices on the Red, Orange, and Blue Lines.
Beyond physical infrastructure, the MBTA is advancing technological solutions to aid accessibility. New digital screens in station lobbies provide real-time service information, including elevator uptime and outages, with audio features for enhanced accessibility. The MBTA Go app has been launched, offering updates on train arrivals, bus stops, and elevator statuses, with plans for further development. A notable innovation in testing is the Navil wayfinding technology, which uses QR codes to assist individuals with low vision in navigating transit environments.
Emergency preparedness was another focal point, with training for transportation staff on evacuation procedures.
The meeting also addressed broader accessibility concerns, such as the importance of visibility and safety at elevator waiting areas and the integration of feedback mechanisms for service improvements. Outreach efforts included a successful ADA event attended by over 1,400 participants.
In addition to transportation updates, the board discussed the progress of sidewalk repairs in downtown Boston, with efforts to address both short-term maintenance and long-term capital improvements. A video presentation illustrated challenges posed by areaway sidewalks, which cover basements and require collaboration with building owners for repairs. Ground-penetrating radar is being used to detect underground voids, and coordination among city departments is ongoing to address these issues.
The meeting also covered legislative matters, including a bill to increase court reporters’ reimbursement rates and the introduction of autonomous vehicles in Boston. Concerns were raised about the quality of transcripts if individuals without specific training conducted court reporting. The board supported a pay raise for stenographers while advocating for retaining the term “certified” to ensure qualified professionals remain involved.
As the meeting concluded, initiatives like the “Accessible Trails for All” bill were revisited. Though the bill had not passed previously, the task force was appointed by the governor.
