- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board recently considered a range of license applications, with the most notable topic being the transfer of a liquor license from the Crystal Restaurant Garage Room to Ken and Co Inc, doing business as Jana Grill and Bar. Attorney Mike Ross represented the applicant, proposing a new Mediterranean concept that would reduce the indoor premise by 65% and remove several existing license conditions. Surin Kiran, the owner and operator of the Janna Grill and Bar in Watertown, is expected to manage the new location. Support for the proposal was expressed by the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services and the Alon Civic Association, with the latter commending the board for its attention to the community’s concerns regarding the location’s history of violations.
The board’s agenda also included applications for various common victualer licenses. WCH Fenway LLC and Three Brothers Fenway Park Inc presented their adjoining food establishments, Dave’s Hot Chicken and The Halal Guys, which would share a patio. Conor Newman from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services conveyed the Fenwick Civic Association’s endorsement of these proposals. Mini Donut D.A LLC, operating as Diva on Broad, sought a license for a shared dining space hosting three food concepts, focusing on digital pickup and catering. Cantina Hospitality LLC discussed plans for a new Taco Bell in Back Bay, located in a converted T-Mobile store, with an emphasis on customizable and vegetarian options.
The board reviewed several petitions for changes to alcohol licenses. Notable discussions included the Institute of Contemporary Art’s request to appoint Kenneth Barrett as the new manager for their license, and the Residence Inn by Marriott South Boston’s proposal to change its manager to Tommy Brunson. Eddie Merl’s LLC sought to rename its establishment to Sullivan’s Steakhouse, while Pineapple Restaurant Group Boston LLC requested changes in officers and managers at the Trophy Room at State Pineapple Boston. Hotel Indigo Boston discussed a management agreement with Jorge Vinal appointed as an independent contractor overseeing restaurant staff.
Anthony’s Market Inc’s petition to alter its license to sell all alcoholic beverages garnered attention due to the support from the Eagle Hill civic association and assurances that the store would not sell nips. Boston Restaurant in Grills LLC proposed extending closing hours to 1:00 a.m., with the Hyde Park neighborhood association backing the change despite parking concerns.
Further topics included a restaurant’s application to modify operating hours and implement a delivery system with designated short-term parking. The establishment’s attorney highlighted their community engagement process and an app used to track deliveries. The Stop and Shop supermarket’s application for a Starbucks area within the store was also discussed, with no immediate concerns from the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.
The lodging house license application from 40 to 41 Anderson LLC was debated, addressing the need for short-term accommodations and security measures like cameras and key code access. However, residents expressed worries about the potential use as an Airbnb or similar service and code enforcement issues. A statement from Councilor Durkin’s office opposed the application citing zoning code violations.
