- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board recently convened to review a series of applications ranging from new liquor licenses to changes in management for various establishments. The meeting, which was held virtually, saw community support for a number of local businesses seeking to either obtain or upgrade their alcohol licenses.
Among the most notable applications was the one from Workhub Boston LLC, looking to secure a general on-premise all alcoholic beverages license for The Substation in Roslindale. This venue is not only a historic site but also a multi-purpose space that has undergone a community-driven renovation. The owners presented their plan to contribute to economic development in the area through a variety of programming. Another application came from a business in Roslindale Village seeking a full liquor license, citing the success of their previous one-day licenses for events and the community’s need for more options in the neighborhood.
The board also reviewed an application for an upgraded license by Jamie’s Variety, a local store valued for its friendly atmosphere and exceptional service. The Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services, along with several residents, registered their support for the business, acknowledging its importance as a neighborhood staple. Additionally, an application for a change in license category from a retail package store for wines and malt beverages to a store for all alcoholic beverages was discussed. The store manager from South Boston emphasized a desire to expand offerings to meet customer demand and maintain their community presence.
Transfers of licenses were also on the agenda, with Evergreen Eatery Inc seeking to transfer a common victualler 7-day wine and malt beverages license from Qdoba Restaurant Corporation. The applicant highlighted their industry experience and the backing from the Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Council, which underscored the strong community support for the transfer. Moreover, the transfer of a retail package store all alcoholic beverages license from PQT Inc to VJ Partners Inc was addressed, including the sellers’ request to pledge the license as collateral for a loan attached to the sale.
Changes in management for several businesses were considered, with applications from Sodexo Operations LLC, SMG Newbury Restaurant LLC, and others, each proposing new managers. The board received these applications without raising any questions.
A particularly unique application was the lodging house dormitory license sought by Northeastern University for a multi-use building. This item was notable due to the extensive community process and approval by the Boston Planning & Development Agency highlighted by the Mayor’s Office of Neighborhood Services.
In assessing the applications, the board took several under advisement, deferring decisions to ensure thorough evaluation. The common thread across all discussions was the community’s active involvement and the board’s attention to the potential impact of these licenses on local neighborhoods.
