- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board took decisive action in its recent meeting, addressing multiple incidents involving assault and battery and overcrowding at several establishments. Notably, the board issued a first warning to Icon and Game on Sports Cafe for assault and battery violations, while Boston Leo Corp received a written warning for a similar infraction. Additionally, violations for overcrowding and underage patrons at The Pudding Stone Tavern resulted in a 4-day suspension.
The most significant enforcement action from the meeting concerned The Pudding Stone Tavern. The establishment was found in violation of overcrowding and allowing underage patrons, which led to a thorough discussion among board members about the appropriate penalty. The resolution was a 4-day suspension of the tavern’s license, with one day to be served immediately and the remaining three days held in abeyance for a probationary period of six months. Moreover, The Pudding Stone Tavern was instructed to submit a written plan addressing the issue with the back door of the premises.
In the case of Icon, a popular nightlife venue, the board found a violation for assault and battery and issued a first warning. This decision underscores the board’s stance on maintaining a safe environment for patrons. Similarly, Game on Sports Cafe was also found in violation of assault and battery and received its first warning.
Another establishment, Biddy Eares, faced repercussions for overcrowding, which led to a violation and a warning.
In contrast, some establishments were found not to have violated any regulations. Mariel and Pika, both of which were under scrutiny for incidents that had occurred, were cleared of violations by the board.
Beyond the enforcement actions, the meeting included discussions on several administrative matters involving the city’s licensed establishments. The board approved a series of petitions related to changes in management, corporate names, and amendments to descriptions of licensed business operations. For instance, AHG Boston 2 TRS LLC successfully changed its manager, while Dynasty Restaurant Inc, ODB Lickers, and Blue Nile Restaurant were among those whose transfer of licenses were approved.
However, not all petitions were approved without reservations. The board opted for further review and a community process before deciding on the transfer of the license for Metamorphosis LLC and the alteration of premise for SS Investments Inc, doing business as Dirty Water Dough Company. The latter was later voted to include a seasonal outdoor patio in its premise, following the board’s initial hesitation. Additionally, a deferral was requested for the vote on the transfer of license and location for Immersive Art Space Boston LLC to Post Road Company LLC amid opposition from the Beacon Hill civic association.
Existing common victualer licenses for Press Juicery Inc and Habib’s Lounge were also approved for changes. Furthermore, Timeout Market LLC received approval for a one-day amendment to its existing license to host a promotional event.
Additionally, the board administratively reviewed and approved a list of applications for special one-day alcoholic beverage licenses, a routine but vital part of ensuring compliance with regulations during special events.
