Boston Licensing Board Debates Extended Hours and Alcohol License Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board recently held a meeting to deliberate on several significant license applications, including extended operating hours for Land of Pizza and a license upgrade for Cisco Brewers Fenway. The board weighed community feedback and business interests, taking all matters under advisement for further consideration.
Land of Pizza, a well-established South Boston eatery, stood out as a focal point of the meeting. The restaurant sought to extend its operating hours from midnight to 2 a.m., sparking discussion among residents and board members. While manager Damian Marco presented positive community outreach results, the board acknowledged receiving two letters of opposition, highlighting concerns over potential noise disturbances in the mixed-use residential area. Jim, a local resident, advocated for a compromise with a 1 a.m. closure, emphasizing the need to balance late-night business with neighborhood tranquility. Lan O’Conor, another resident, supported the full extension, emphasizing the restaurant’s responsible management and contributions to local sports teams. She noted, “They do their own deliveries versus third-party deliveries,” presenting Land of Pizza as a beneficial community presence. The board decided to take the matter under advisement.
Another notable discussion centered around Cisco Brewers Fenway’s request to extend the closing hour of their patio from 10 p.m. to 11 p.m. Attorney Dennis Quilty, representing the establishment, noted the absence of concerns from the Fenway Civic Association following a community meeting. He articulated the aim to accommodate post-game crowds with the proposed hour extension, stating, “We have operated last summer… with very few objections.” Despite a letter of opposition from a landlord wary of potential noise issues for residential tenants, the board expressed appreciation for Cisco Brewers’ responsiveness to community feedback and decided to further deliberate on the request.
In addition to extended hours, the board considered several petitions for alcohol license upgrades. Modern Pastry, Inc., a longstanding North End business, sought to change its license classification to a restricted all alcoholic beverages license. Emphasizing the demand for a broader beverage selection, Butler stated, “Modern has been in the North End since 1930… and has operated successfully without violation.” The board noted the support from local neighborhood associations and took this matter under advisement.
Kalamari Waterfront Corp., operating as The Daily Catch, also pursued an upgrade from beer and wine to a full alcohol license to meet customer demands for cocktails. Attorney Louis Fedora highlighted the restaurant’s solid reputation in the North End and community backing, with no opposition from neighborhood associations. Similarly, Cafe Delos Sport, Inc. and Mumbai Spice advocated for full alcohol licenses, each emphasizing their longstanding community presence and customer requests for expanded beverage offerings.
The board’s review extended to new applications, such as Dorchester Beer Holdings LLC’s request for a common victualler license for the Dorchester Brewing Company. Owner Matthew Mallaloy detailed the necessity of incorporating alcohol sales to adapt to market changes and sustain the business. Manager Stephanie Berman assured the board of her compliance with beverage industry regulations. The board took this application under advisement, planning to vote on all matters during their next session.
