- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board recently addressed a series of incidents involving local bars and restaurants, with topics ranging from armed robbery to allegations of assault by bouncers. One notable issue discussed was an armed robbery outside an unnamed bar in October 2023, where the victim was threatened with a knife and had their phone and personal information stolen. Delays in management led to a lapse in the preservation of crucial video footage, which the general manager assured had been rectified.
At the same meeting, the board examined another serious incident on Causeway Street, where patrons and security staff were involved in an altercation. The establishment’s attorney and security director defended the actions of the security personnel, insisting they followed appropriate de-escalation policies, while Detective Swain’s police report supported this account, noting that the alleged victim was intoxicated and aggressive.
A similar defense was presented for an incident at the Scorpion Bar and Restaurant, where it was claimed that an employee, initially accused of assault and battery, was actually acting in self-defense against an intoxicated patron. The detective corroborated this assertion with video evidence.
Further discussions included an assault and battery with a dangerous weapon that took place outside Latino Restaurant, which the attorney stressed was unforeseeable and occurred off the premises. Additionally, at Slades Bar and Grill, a patron suffered an assault, robbery, and transphobic slurs. The bar’s representative recounted the events leading to police intervention without board members posing questions.
Another altercation at Slades involved a banned patron who had previously engaged in a fight and activated a fire alarm; the board inquired about the number of security staff and the retention of video evidence. The Home Run Cafe in Dorchester was scheduled to discuss an assault on security staff, but the absence of a representative led to a postponement. An assault at a South Boston establishment resulted in serious injury, with the board deferring a decision until after reviewing surveillance footage
