Boston Licensing Board Issues Warnings After Incidents at Local Establishments
- Meeting Overview:
The Boston Licensing Board convened on April 30, 2026, addressing a range of issues, from serious violations involving assault and battery at establishments like Sidebar, operated by K&G Entertainment LLC, to routine transactional matters such as license approvals and amendments. Key decisions included issuing warnings to Sidebar for non-compliance with video footage requests and emphasizing the need for improved training in security and de-escalation tactics.
The meeting commenced with an examination of alleged violations at Sidebar, where incidents on February 7, 2026, involving assault and battery with deadly weapons—a gunshot and a knife—were reported. The board discussed the lack of compliance by Sidebar in providing requested video evidence, which prompted a member to express a willingness to presume a negative inference about the establishment’s conduct without needing to view the footage. The board reached a consensus that the incidents constituted violations and agreed to issue warnings. Furthermore, the board stressed the importance of training for employees, particularly those in security roles, to prevent future escalations. The licensee was urged to submit a security and operations plan within 30 days.
Following the Sidebar discussion, the board turned its attention to Stage Karaoke LLC. Employees at this establishment were accused of drinking alcohol after hours and distributing free drinks. However, the board concluded that the actions were those of “two rogue employees” and found no violation, reaching a unanimous agreement.
A separate case involved Little Haiti International Cuisine, which faced allegations of remaining open after hours. The board determined there was insufficient evidence to support the violation due to the inability to confirm the police’s timeline. While the board did issue a first warning for loitering, other allegations related to assaults were not substantiated. The board reminded the licensee about the importance of managing lines and contacting police when necessary, especially with the impending summer months that could increase foot traffic.
In another matter, Identity Foods LLC, doing business as Puyo Centro, was accused of assault and battery on police. The board found no fault with the licensee, unanimously agreeing that no violation occurred.
The board also addressed concerns at Castillo Beer, Wine, and Liquors LLC, where public drinking in front of the store had become an issue. Although acknowledging the problem, the board recognized the owner’s efforts to mitigate the situation and emphasized ongoing communication and training to ensure compliance with regulations.
The meeting also included a range of transactional topics. Champion Pizza Boston LLC and Panda Express both received unanimous approval for common victular licenses, extending their operating hours to midnight and 11:00 p.m., respectively. In contrast, Lency’s failure to appear resulted in a rescheduled hearing for its application.
Cafe Cella LLC’s request for a license was deferred to allow for community engagement, while Mothership Awife LLC’s Revival Cafe and Kitchen and VFC Eats successfully extended their operating hours with unanimous board approval. Other approvals included a lodging house license for Mutum House Corporation and a name change from Five Horses Tavern to Chester Tavern.
Massachusetts Fine Wines and Spirits LLC’s managerial change was approved, along with multiple pledges of licenses by Tavern Road, Inc. LLH LLC also received board approval for changes in ownership interest at Trader Joe’s locations.
Several establishments, including Han, Zorito, and Willies, sought upgrades to restricted all alcoholic beverages licenses, receiving unanimous consent. F&H Inc.’s Mi Pueblito restaurant received approval for both a common victular license and an upgrade to a restricted license.
Treehouse Brewing Company applied for multiple pouring licenses, all of which were unanimously approved. Superstar Cuisine, requesting a common victular license due to its zip code restriction, also received support.
The agenda continued with approvals for new common victular licenses at previously licensed locations, changes in existing licenses, and an expansion of Trillium’s outdoor patio. A change in the corporate name and management at Milford Street LLC was also ratified.
The board approved a one-day amendment for Landmark Public House to include a back patio for a special event, alongside several special one-day alcoholic beverages licenses.
