Boston Licensing Board Weighs Key License Upgrades Amid Community Support
- Meeting Overview:
During its recent virtual meeting, the Boston Licensing Board considered several applications for licensing changes and upgrades, reflecting community interests and business expansions. The most notable proposal came from Ishtiaq H. Naqvi, who sought to enhance his convenience store’s offerings by changing his license from beer and wine to all alcoholic beverages, alongside a relocation and rebranding effort.
Ishtiaq H. Naqvi’s application involved upgrading the existing license at his store, located on Washington Street, to accommodate a full range of alcoholic beverages, while also moving the business to 1747 Washington Street and renaming it to Cloverdale Farms. Naqvi, who has been operating the store since 2005 with no violations, presented a strong case supported by a petition from numerous customers. He highlighted his strict carding policy and personal involvement in the store’s operations, clocking over 40 hours a week. The board took note of the absence of opposition, backed by the mayor’s office representative who deferred to the board’s judgment.
Another discussion centered on the transfer of the all-alcohol beverage license for the Godfrey Hotel Boston. This application involved a transfer from Oxford Hotels & Resorts LLC to Dean BC Propco LLC, with proposed modifications to the premises description to reflect the hotel’s extensive facilities, including a large restaurant and bar. The board received assurances of no operational changes beyond adding seating, and the absence of public testimony suggested smooth proceedings.
In a similar vein, the board considered Eal Point Cafe LLC’s request to convert its beer, wine, and cordials license to a restricted all-alcohol license at the Shawmut Inn. The applicant emphasized the demand for craft cocktails and noted the lack of opposition during community outreach. This application, along with others like Fox and the Knife’s similar upgrade request, was taken under advisement.
The meeting also addressed a series of license transfers and managerial changes, such as the transfer of a license to Bloom Seaport LLC for a new Japanese comfort food venue, and the transfer of management at prominent restaurants like Joe’s American Bar and Grill and Time Out Market. These applications were characterized by their procedural nature and received little opposition.
Furthermore, the board discussed Julia’s Kitchen LLC’s application for an all-alcoholic beverages license at Logan Airport, a proposal driven by Massport’s outreach after the previous license holder went out of business. The application emphasized the public need for the service, and the board expressed enthusiasm about the venture’s potential.
