- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Boston Planning and Development Board discussed a range of topics, including the redevelopment of Roxbury parcels by the Garrison Trotter Neighborhood Association, a proposed project on Western Avenue, the transition of funds and employees from the Boston Planning and Development Agency (BPDA) to the City of Boston, and a proposed hotel development at the historic Alexandria Hotel site.
The board’s approval of the Garrison Trotter Neighborhood Association’s proposal to transform three parcels of land in Roxbury into community spaces was a notable item of discussion.. The association’s plan includes an urban wild open space, a community garden, and a Zen garden named after a local educator, all designed to honor the neighborhood’s history and contribute to environmental justice.
Another focal point of the meeting was the proposed project on Western Avenue, which entails the demolition of existing buildings to make way for a mixed-use development with residential units, retail space, and community amenities. The project aligns with the Western Avenue Corridor Study and rezoning plan and incorporates affordable housing units. Public comments during the hearing ranged from strong support, citing the potential for job opportunities and community benefits, to concerns regarding the project’s impact on the neighborhood and the need for further negotiation with the community task force.
The transition of BPDA funds and employees to the City of Boston was also a key topic, with a focus on the budget, capital requests, and implications of the home rule petition. The board reviewed the financial memorandum of understanding. Discussions highlighted the importance of preserving benefits for FDIC employees and the continuity of development processes under the oversight of the City Council.
The board considered the redevelopment proposal for the Alexandria Hotel, which seeks to restore the historic structure and add a rooftop restaurant and bar. The project, which faced economic challenges and changing market conditions, was ultimately approved to return to its original hotel use as planned in 2019.
The meeting also touched on various other development projects and approvals, including the authorization of affordable housing agreements for homeownership and rental units, infrastructure funding applications, and the establishment of an acquisition fund for city resilience and equity. The fiscal year 2025 operating budget and capital expenditures were approved, facilitating the integration of the newly established City of Boston Planning Department.
