The commission approved a $20,000 contract with Skanska USA Building, Inc. for owner project management services and a $495,835 contract with Rist-Frost-Shumway Engineering for professional design services. These contracts aim to replace outdated heating systems at Margarita Muñiz Academy and Orchard Gardens with modern, potentially all-electric heat pump systems. This initiative aligns with Boston’s goals for increased energy efficiency and reduced carbon emissions. Each school will also undergo roof replacements, with provisions for future solar panel installations.

The MSBA invited eight Boston schools into the Accelerated Repair Program after a competitive selection process. However, due to the high volume of statewide submissions, the projects are staggered, with the first group including Muñiz Academy and Orchard Gardens. The remaining schools will be addressed following city council appropriations and consultant assignments.

Additionally, an amendment to the owner’s project manager contract with Lero Program and Construction Management for the William E. Carter School was approved. The amendment adds $25,850 to the contract for continued third-party testing and inspections of the building envelope. The project’s completion is set for October 2026, and the additional funds will support critical testing processes to verify the building’s durability and weather resilience.
