Meanwhile, Nikki Dicker shared a distressing incident involving her daughter, pointing to a systemic failure to ensure the safety of students with individualized education programs (IEPs).

The superintendent, Mary Skipper, provided updates on various district activities, including the Capital planning team’s community engagement for long-term facilities plans and the Office of Family and Community Advancement’s support for newly arrived families. Skipper also acknowledged the importance of social workers in schools.

During the action items portion of the meeting, the committee unanimously approved the appointment of Lena Harix as executive secretary to the Boston School Committee and grants totaling $91,900. A discussion unfolded around the submission of a statement of interest for a new core project to the Massachusetts School Building Authority for the BCLA McCormack 7 to 12 school, which would promise a state-of-the-art campus connected to the UMass Boston campus. The committee and superintendent underscored the necessity of transparency and community trust.
