Bound Brook Superintendent Recognized as a “Superintendent to Watch” for Leadership Excellence
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Bound Brook School Board meeting, the Superintendent Alvin Freeman was recognized for his outstanding leadership in the first five years of his tenure, receiving the “Superintendent to Watch” award from the National School Public Relations Association. The meeting also covered a range of topics, including student achievements, sports updates, committee reports, and administrative decisions, with particular emphasis on health insurance and construction progress.
The meeting began with a notable moment for Superintendent Alvin Freeman, who was honored as one of the 30 recipients of the prestigious “Superintendent to Watch” award. The award highlights exemplary leadership in fostering communication and community engagement, which are considered vital aspects of a robust school system. The president of the board expressed gratitude for Freeman’s efforts, stating that this recognition is “only the tip of the iceberg.”
Dr. Freeman also took the opportunity to commend students and educators for their accomplishments. January being School Board Recognition Month, Freeman extended his appreciation to board members for their dedication. The meeting continued with the recognition of students of the month from various schools. From writing skills and artistic talents to aspirations of becoming engineers and firefighters, the student achievements highlighted were diverse and inspiring.
In addition to student recognitions, the meeting also celebrated district employees. Esther Quesada, a guidance counselor, was recognized for her nurturing approach and initiatives like the conversation café, which supports ESL students and fosters community within the school. Tiffany Kiss, an art teacher, was honored as Educator of the Month for her dedication and innovative enrichment programs that engage parents and students alike.
Beyond recognitions, the School Board meeting addressed issues related to district operations. One of the main topics was the rising cost of health insurance. The board discussed efforts by certain administrators who researched and consulted with brokers to identify the best health insurance options for the district. As a result, the board decided to switch to Integrity Health, a move aimed at optimizing health benefits for district employees while managing costs effectively.
Construction updates on the preschool modulars were also provided, noting that progress is steady despite a two-month delay due to permit issues. The board anticipates completion by the end of March, with weather conditions being a potential variable affecting the timeline.
Plans for biannual newsletters in both English and Spanish, alongside monthly e-newsletters, were disclosed.
Further discussions touched upon personnel changes, including a notable resignation that evoked a sense of loss among board members. Despite the departure, there was hope expressed for the individual’s future endeavors. The board also acknowledged donations made to alleviate student lunch debts, describing these as touching gestures that positively impact the student community.
Committee reports provided insights into ongoing educational and administrative initiatives. The education committee highlighted the success of the ASI program at the high school, which offers additional support in math and English. New course offerings focused on drones and mechatronics were also discussed.
The governance committee addressed policy updates, including discussions on a potential cell phone ban, which remains pending further guidance. The introduction of exit surveys for departing staff was mentioned as a method to gather valuable feedback and identify trends.
