Bradford County Bolsters Youth Sports with $150,000 Donation and New Recreation Initiatives
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Bradford County Council meeting, a focus was placed on expanding youth sports opportunities through the efforts of Rapid Sports United. With a noteworthy $150,000 donation from the Tourism Development Council, the organization outlined plans to enhance local sports facilities and make sports participation more accessible and affordable for families.
Rapid Sports United, represented by Dena, highlighted their mission to foster youth sports in Bradford County. The organization has formed a diverse board committed to promoting inclusivity in sports programs. Dena, recently appointed as Recreation Director, presented a detailed PowerPoint outlining the organization’s achievements and future plans. These include renovating sports facilities, specifically modernizing restroom facilities adjacent to the pickleball courts and upgrading water lines, which have been supported by local businesses and city officials.
Plans for facility improvements included adding new restrooms, expanding capacity, and enhancing seating arrangements. The city’s building department was praised for expediting necessary permits to commence these projects swiftly.
The presentation also disclosed plans for the affordability of sports programs. The program set a price of $75 for T-ball, with a cap for families with multiple children, and encouraged families facing financial difficulties to seek assistance. Dena announced an array of sports offerings, including softball, baseball, racquetball, pickleball, flag football, basketball, and soccer, each designed to cater to children of varying ages.
Moreover, Rapid Sports United has developed a 90-day plan to collaborate with high schools and community members, intending to create a comprehensive and affordable sports program. The organization plans to use the Sports Engine platform for online signups and scheduling, alongside a robust social media presence to engage the community. Volunteers, including parents and high school students, will be crucial in operating concessions and managing events, with opportunities for students to earn community service hours.
The county manager highlighted the success of a recent float entry in the Stark Christmas parade and announced the agricultural fair’s grand opening on February 26th, with live entertainment planned. Coordination with neighboring counties is underway to ensure the fair and the recreation grand opening, tentatively set for two weeks later, are well-organized and attended.
Further notable updates included the extension of high-speed internet services to over 800 homes in the Brooker area by Cox Communications, along with increased permit applications through the planning and zoning office. The manager promised ongoing updates on broadband service development.
