Bradford County Council Approves $2.3 Million Road Resurfacing Amid Substance Use Treatment Expansion
- Meeting Overview:
The Bradford County Council approved a key road resurfacing project funded by the Florida Department of Transportation and explored significant expansions in substance use treatment programs. These initiatives highlight the council’s ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and address pressing health concerns in the community.
The meeting’s most notable outcome was the approval of a detailed resolution for the resurfacing of County Road 21B, a project under the Florida Department of Transportation’s Small County Road Assistance Program. This initiative, valued at approximately $2.3 million, includes the design, construction, and inspection of the roadway. The board acknowledged its importance for the community and expressed unanimous support for entering into an agreement with the FDOT to facilitate the project. However, the council also faced scrutiny over the prioritization of this project compared to other roadways, such as 177th Street, which has reportedly been neglected.
Simultaneously, the council received an update from Lieutenant David Weekes about the county’s evolving role as a “core county” in a comprehensive program addressing substance use disorders. This designation is part of an initiative by the Department of Children and Families and the Agency for Health Care Administration. The program aims to enhance care for individuals struggling with substance issues through collaboration among first responders, long-term treatment facilities, and hospitals.
The council was briefed on the operational aspects of the medication-assisted treatment program, which distributes nuxin kits at fire stations and facilitates self-referrals via QR codes and direct contact. Patients undergo an initial assessment and, if suitable, are referred to Meridian for further treatment options, including mental health support and social services assistance. The program also boasts a mobile support unit, repurposed from an old bookmobile, to reach patients lacking transportation options.
Despite recent successes, including the treatment of five patients in the field, concerns arose about the program’s sustainability post-grant funding. The first year of funding, amounting to $700,000, covers operational costs without taxpayer burden, but the program must secure additional funding to sustain itself beyond the initial grant period. Discussions highlighted the need for ongoing support and optimism about securing future funding.
Further conversations during the meeting addressed the integration of substance use treatment within the jail system. It was noted that Meridian has two groups established in the jail, with processes in place to identify and support patients nearing release. This approach aims to provide continuity of care and reduce the risk of relapse among recently released individuals.
The meeting also touched upon challenges in logistical support for patients, particularly concerning transportation for medical appointments and prescriptions. The council discussed potential funding sources and grants to alleviate these difficulties and ensure timely access to necessary care.
In other matters, the council addressed the hiring process for a new fair manager. Concerns were raised about the transparency and fairness of the interview and scoring process, as discrepancies in candidate selection scores were highlighted. The council acknowledged the procedural challenges and expressed a desire to revisit the process to improve transparency and fairness.
Additionally, the council took time to honor the late Ali McCrae, a notable advocate for Habitat for Humanity, recognizing his contributions to housing, food banks, and the military. The council also commended efforts related to opioid abatement programs.
