Bradford County Residents Voice Concerns Over Budget, Transparency, and Property Tax Increases
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent Bradford County Council meeting, the discussion centered around the adoption of the tentative millage rate and budget for the fiscal year 2025-2026. The proposed millage rate of 10.00 mills, higher than the previous year due to rising property values, sparked significant public concern. Citizens expressed frustration over transparency, particularly regarding meeting notifications and property tax increases.
The meeting opened with public comments addressing the proposed millage rate increase, which is projected to generate approximately $15.5 million in ad valorem tax revenue, an increase from the prior year attributed to a rise in property values. One resident, Julia Hasten, questioned a $700 increase in her property taxes despite no changes to her property, reflecting widespread community confusion about tax assessments. Officials directed her to the property appraiser’s office for further clarification.
A key aspect of the discussion was the perceived lack of transparency in meeting notifications. Residents, including Bo Hast, voiced concerns that they were not adequately informed about the meeting times and locations, citing discrepancies in the timing of notices received. Hast alleged that the meeting’s scheduling seemed designed to limit public participation, as it was not listed on the regular schedule, and many residents were unaware it was taking place.
Another resident, Sam Henderson, raised issues about the financial burden of a new fire and EMS assessment. He questioned the necessity of the assessment. In response, a representative explained that the assessment was determined by a consulting firm and emphasized that provisions were available for individuals unable to afford the payment due to financial hardship.
The council also addressed the overall tentative budget for the fiscal year, totaling $89,541,034, which includes inter-fund transfers and bond reserves.
