Brainerd City Council Approves Fire Station Renovation and Park Preservation
- Meeting Overview:
The Brainerd City Council meeting held recently focused on approving developments related to the city’s fire station renovation and the preservation of Gustoson Park. The council also addressed stormwater management, signage proposals, and infrastructure upgrades, all of which could have lasting impacts on the community.
Central to the meeting was the approval of a design service contract and the selection of a general contractor for the renovation of the Brainerd Fire Station. The fire chief presented a proposal from Woodsth, outlining plans for an extensive renovation scheduled to begin in mid-April and anticipated to conclude by the end of 2026 or early 2027. The project aims to enhance the facility’s capacity, adding approximately 4,200 square feet for apparatus space and turnout gear storage, as well as a 2,600 square foot mezzanine for mechanical purposes and a fitness area.
The fire chief reiterated the priorities of the renovation, emphasizing firefighter health and wellness, efficient space usage, and the separation of clean and contaminated areas. The existing structure, built in the early 1980s, will undergo upgrades, including new heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and plumbing systems. The east side of the building is slated for demolition and reconstruction. Following a discussion, the council voted to proceed with the project, with North Construction selected as the general contractor.
The council also turned its attention to Gustoson Park, where a notable decision was made regarding its future. The park board had recommended designating Gustoson Park as a city park, effectively halting any potential residential development. The council unanimously supported this recommendation, with members expressing the importance of maintaining green spaces for community recreation. One council member underscored the sentiment by stating, “Once it’s gone, it’s gone,” emphasizing the park’s role as a vital neighborhood amenity.
In addition to these major topics, the council addressed a proposal from the FFA alumni to install “proud FFA community” signs across several city locations. The city engineer outlined the plan to replace faded “hearts safe community” signs with the new FFA signs. The proposal received unanimous support from the council.
The meeting also delved into stormwater management issues on Kora Street. The council discussed ongoing challenges with stormwater discharge affecting private properties and considered the staff recommendation to hire HR Green for preliminary engineering work. The motion to proceed with HR Green was passed, with an understanding that the city would bear the entire cost, given the lack of financial participation from the county and adjacent property owners.
Infrastructure improvements were further discussed concerning the Voyager Heights project. The council approved an oversizing plan for water and sewer upgrades essential for future development. This plan aims to enhance fire flows and eliminate dead-end lines, ultimately improving water quality in the area. Questions about the risks associated with the plan were raised, but reassurances were given regarding the long-standing need for these upgrades.
The session also included updates on other city projects and initiatives. Additionally, preparations for the upcoming Highway 210 reconstruction project were noted, with RLEN Excavating confirmed as the low bidder.
As the meeting concluded, council members shared their reports, highlighting ongoing challenges and developments within the city. The meeting ended with a closed session motion to address preliminary considerations regarding an employee.
