Branchburg School Board Highlights Life Skills Program and Honors Departing Members
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Branchburg School Board meeting showcased the district’s commitment to innovative educational programs and recognized the contributions of departing board members. The meeting featured a detailed presentation of the middle school life skills program, an initiative that integrates vocational training with practical experience, and the board bid farewell to two long-serving members, acknowledging their dedication and service.
The life skills program, led by Mr. Miracle, was highlighted as a model of practical education within the district. Featuring diverse components, the program combines academic learning with real-world skills development. Students participate in a coffee cart initiative, where they learn math, measurement, and food safety by preparing and selling drinks and baked goods. The proceeds from this initiative support the Somerset County Food Bank and the Adopt-a-Student program, emphasizing community involvement and social responsibility.
Two students, Cade and Charlie, shared their experiences in the program, underscoring its impact. Charlie discussed field trips, such as visits to ShopRite and a mall, which involved budgeting exercises and interaction with younger children. Cade fondly recounted a pumpkin-picking trip, highlighting the joy of engaging with peers in a learning environment. The program also features a miniature apartment setup, allowing students to practice self-help skills, and a shop scenario for honing vocational abilities.
Mr. Miracle emphasized the importance of community support and staff involvement in the program’s success. He shared plans for a visit to Lifettown, a facility designed to enhance community skills. He expressed optimism about future endeavors and appreciated the staff’s dedication. Board members showed interest in promoting the program through the school newsletter, a suggestion warmly received by Mr. Miracle and Dr. Burton.
The meeting also marked a notable moment as the board bid farewell to members Terry Joyce and Bindu Sha, who were attending their final meeting. Joyce’s tenure since 2011 was celebrated, noting her service on various committees and roles as board president and vice president. Sha was commended for her vibrant energy and advocacy for students. The chairperson expressed gratitude for their dedication, wishing them well and inviting them to future meetings.
In addition to these discussions, the board recognized several staff members for their exceptional contributions. Jackie, an 8th-grade ELA special education instructor, was honored for her dedication in balancing multiple roles while pursuing her master’s degree. Kelly Bole, a literacy coach, was lauded for her support in enhancing teachers’ literacy instruction practices. Other honorees included Colleen Barnett, recognized for her engaging teaching methods in math, and Antonio Cornaceia, praised for his exemplary role as a bus driver. Each honoree received a certificate, a gift card, and a designated parking spot for a month.
The board also discussed governance updates, particularly the ongoing superintendent search. The job advertisement opened on November 18th and will remain open until January 4th, with candidate reviews scheduled for January 20th. The board completed all input sessions.
Further discussions included the approval of several financial items, donations, and grants benefiting the district. Noteworthy donations were received from the Branchburg Education Foundation, the Branchburg PTO, and the Megan Rose Bradley Foundation, among others. These contributions will support educational programs, provide essential supplies, and enhance student experiences.
Public comments highlighted community concerns, including inconsistencies in district policies at Whiten Elementary School. A community member requested alignment between school handbooks and board-approved policies, particularly regarding homework evaluation and electronic device usage. Concerns about facility maintenance and health-related communication practices were also raised, prompting the board to consider addressing these issues to ensure student safety and well-being.
