Branchburg School Board Unveils Budget with Safety Measures and Infrastructure Upgrades
- Meeting Overview:
At the recent Branchburg School Board meeting, the board approved a final budget exceeding $61 million, prioritizing curriculum revisions, social and emotional learning enhancements, and significant safety measures. The budget, which adheres to the 2% tax levy cap, includes a healthcare adjustment waiver due to rising healthcare costs, alongside an increase of $237,000 in state aid. The budget is set to decrease taxes by $190 for homes assessed at $500,000, with a total school budget of $53,185,530.
Central to the meeting was a focus on infrastructure needs, especially at Stony Brook School. The board discussed replacing aging roofs and HVAC systems and renovating bathrooms. A proposed addition of a dedicated gymnasium at Stony Brook was a point, addressing current scheduling bottlenecks caused by the multipurpose use of the captorium for lunch, assemblies, plays, and gym activities. The board characterized the gym addition as necessary, considering the student population’s needs, particularly during winter months. An expansion of the parking lot was also considered to reduce congestion during pickup and drop-off times and accommodate future growth due to state-mandated pre-K programs and local housing developments.
Safety enhancements were a highlighted aspect of the budget, with plans to acquire additional security cameras, hire security guards at Whiten and Stony Brook schools, and invest in cybersecurity protection software.
The meeting also celebrated the achievements of students participating in the Branchburg Education Foundation (BEF) readathon. The readathon raised over $19,000, with students logging 154,000 minutes of reading across three schools. Notable participants included Billy Lynch, who raised $940, and John B. Caric, who logged 7,300 minutes of reading, among others. Teachers were also recognized for their contributions, with Miss Francisco and Miss Natali’s classes excelling in both fundraising and reading minutes.
Recognition extended to staff members for their exceptional service. Karina Resta, a special education teacher, and Carrie Santoro, a fifth-grade teacher, were acknowledged for their dedication and leadership. Additionally, the “Teachers Who Make Magic” awards highlighted the outstanding contributions of Kelly Bole, Samantha Ruger, and Brian Bodner.
A report on the district’s anti-bullying self-assessment revealed areas needing improvement, prompting corrective measures. The board designated April as Autism Acceptance Month, fostering inclusivity, and supported a campaign to raise mental health awareness by lighting up buildings in green during May.
The meeting welcomed updates on the Red Rock preserve, with the district committed to arranging transportation for relocating families. Community support was acknowledged, with thanks extended to businesses and residents for their contributions.
During the public comment section, Randy Lee Childers, president of the Branchburg Township Education Association, expressed gratitude for the dedication of the BTA negotiations team in reaching a contract agreement. Laura Foley from the Branchburg PTO highlighted upcoming events and ongoing support for families affected by the Red Rock situation.
The board emphasized their commitment to responsible financial management, aiming to be debt-free by 2031, with discussions on essential investments in school facilities as part of “phase one” of their strategy.
