Brick Community Calls for Traffic Safety Measures in Wake of Tragic Incident
- Meeting Overview:
The recent Brick Town Council meeting was dominated by an outpouring of community concern over traffic safety, particularly in school zones, following a tragic incident involving a young boy named Jackson Mueller. Residents voiced urgent calls for action to improve safety on Lanes Mill Road and other critical areas, stressing the need for increased police presence, reduced speed limits, and enhanced infrastructure to protect children.
The public comment session was emotionally charged, with numerous residents sharing personal anecdotes and collective frustrations. One resident recounted the distressing experiences of Jackson’s family. Another resident advocated for better support and compensation for crossing guards, who play a role in safeguarding children at busy intersections.
The acting police chief addressed these concerns, expressing condolences to Jackson’s family and acknowledging the severity of the situation. He assured residents that immediate steps would be taken to ensure all traffic lights in school zones were operational and pledged increased police monitoring to enhance safety. However, he noted that changes to speed limits require a formal process and could not be enacted instantaneously.
Mayor Lisa Crate and other council members expressed gratitude for the community’s active participation and confirmed ongoing discussions with county officials to address the outlined issues. The council also highlighted the emotional toll on first responders and the broader community, acknowledging the need for collective healing and proactive solutions.
In addition to addressing traffic safety, the council meeting featured recognitions and resolutions of note. Mayor Crate led a presentation honoring Brick Township EMS Rescue for its 20th anniversary, celebrating the dedication of EMS professionals who have responded to nearly 200,000 calls. EMS Director Jim Rickio reflected on the service’s growth and the township’s support, emphasizing the importance of well-equipped emergency services. The mayor proclaimed May 27, 2026, as Brick EMS Rescue Day, urging residents to appreciate their life-saving work.
The council also passed a series of resolutions, including the authorization of a contract to purchase 155 Glock G47 handguns for the police department. This acquisition, amounting to $79,670.25, was facilitated through a state contract and aimed to replace the primary duty weapons of officers with new firearms equipped with optics. The need for updated equipment was acknowledged as a necessary measure to maintain effective law enforcement capabilities.
Further resolutions focused on infrastructure and community support. The council approved a $576,454.16 purchase of a jetack truck for the township’s road department, as outlined in the 2026 capital budget. Additionally, they authorized a final application to the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection concerning the diversion of parkland at Michael A. Milano Park. This measure addressed a prior oversight involving a drainage easement that inadvertently constituted a diversion of protected parkland, with compensatory land acquisitions planned to rectify the situation.
Several grants were accepted to support municipal initiatives, including a $200,000 grant from the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs for minibuses and senior center improvements, a $170,500 grant from Ocean County’s Office of Senior Services for senior center operations, and a $50,000 grant from the Ocean County Planning Board for pumpout boat maintenance.
The council also considered public safety and infrastructure improvements, authorizing the sale of surplus vehicles and equipment, approving a contract for resurfacing the playground at Trader Cove, and purchasing multiple Chevrolet Tahoes for police divisions. These measures reflect ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and community resources.
