- Meeting Overview:
During the recent Bridgewater-Raynham Regional School Committee meeting, significant public concern was voiced about the elimination of the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Coordinator position. Community members, particularly from the Bridgewater Communities for Civil Rights (BCCR), expressed their dismay and urged the committee to reinstate the role, emphasizing its importance for fostering an inclusive school environment.
Christina, a member of BCCR, read a letter into the public record outlining the community’s concerns. The letter highlighted the progress made under the former DEI Coordinator and the fear that eliminating the position would reverse these advancements. The BCCR members emphasized that continuing DEI efforts is crucial, especially in an era where support for such programs is waning nationally. They offered to assist in any way possible to reinstate the position, including contacting state legislators and other community leaders.
Following Christina’s statement, other community members echoed the sentiment. One member, who had worked closely with the former DEI Coordinator, stressed the importance of maintaining the momentum of DEI initiatives, even without a dedicated coordinator.
In response to the public comments, a committee member acknowledged the need for more diversity training and apologized for any lapses in addressing individuals correctly. The meeting then proceeded to other agenda items, including the ratification of a contract with the secretary union.
The committee also discussed the long-range planning report, focusing on the development of goals for the 2024-2025 academic year. The report included an overview of progress made on the Student Success Plan and highlighted discussions on budget concerns and the importance of inclusion in extracurricular activities. A motion to approve the superintendent’s key actions, benchmarks, and evidence for 2024-2025 was passed unanimously.
