- Meeting Overview:
In the latest Bridgewater Town Council meeting, the most significant topic up for discussion was the coordination of the Public Service Electric & Gas Company’s (PSE&G) ongoing gas main replacement project with the township’s infrastructure and road improvement plans. The project, part of PSE&G’s Gas System Modernization Program (GSMP), aims to upgrade the gas system to reduce methane emissions and enhance service reliability. The council also addressed concerns expressed over detour changes and road maintenance associated with the construction.
The GSMP’s upgrade in Bridgewater includes replacing several miles of gas mains, which has already been partially completed. Andrea Almeida, the project manager, highlighted the progress, detailing the work in progress, completed sections, and outreach efforts planned to keep the community informed. The presentation to the council covered the specifics of the gas main installations and the necessity for residents to schedule appointments to transfer services to the new mains.
During the meeting, PSNG representatives, including public affairs manager Mike Coyle and project manager Andrea Almeida, discussed the project’s current phase, which involves significant work on Foothill Road, North Bridge Street, Church Road, and Meadow Road. The company is conducting bi-weekly meetings with township and school officials and daily morning meetings with law enforcement to discuss detours. PSNG also maintains a website updated weekly to inform residents about the ongoing work.
Council members expressed concerns about the impact of the construction on local traffic patterns, road closures, noise, and specifically the use of aggregate in road repairs, which has potential hazards for pedestrians and vehicles. The PSNG representative acknowledged these concerns and informed the council that the contractor is responsible for maintaining trenches and sweeping the roads, although there had been challenges in coordinating these activities for completed streets from the previous year.
Residents attending the meeting were given the opportunity to ask questions about the GSMP. A member of the public inquired about the workers entering homes for service work, to which the PSNG representative responded that only PSNG employees handle indoor work, while contractors manage outdoor work up to the sidewalk. Another resident shared a positive experience with PSNG employees during their home service work.
The discussion further delved into the communication strategy of PSNG. The company has been proactive in its efforts to communicate with residents affected by the construction, establishing regular modes of communication such as phone and email notifications.
Moreover, Councilman Norgalis reported on a variety of April events, including Earth Day and the display of pinwheels for child abuse awareness, alongside noting the delay of the Crescent Moon display and the upcoming 2024 solar eclipse. In matters of public safety, an officer was sworn in, with emphasis on his experience and dedication. Councilman Kurdyla attended the opening day of BBI baseball and a Community Block Grant meeting, while Councilman Pedroso announced the Earth Day Arbor Day event and the rescheduling of the May 16th council meeting.
In a more routine element of the meeting, the council approved the minutes for the April 4th regular session and closed session. Despite the significance of the gas main replacement project, the council ensured to address these other community matters.
The council requested that the digital copy of the PSNG presentation be made available for public access. The council acknowledged the importance of the gas main replacement project and the necessity for it to progress swiftly, given that much of the construction is state-mandated.
