Brookline School Committee Faces Debate Over Religious Holidays, AI, and Enrollment Trends
- Meeting Overview:
The Brookline School Committee meeting on November 6, 2025, witnessed discussions on the proposed changes to the 2026-2027 school calendar, particularly regarding the inclusion of religious and cultural holidays. This debate highlighted a community divide, with strong opinions expressed both for and against maintaining current observances. The committee also navigated topics like artificial intelligence in schools and enrollment trends.
The potential removal of religious and cultural observances from the school calendar dominated the meeting’s public comment segment. Community members and clergy opposed the proposal to eliminate holidays such as Yom Kippur, Rosh Hashanah, Lunar New Year, Eid al-Adha, and Good Friday. Alicia Shu, a retired teacher and current member of the Brookline Asian-American Family Network, articulated the opposition, emphasizing the importance of these holidays in reflecting the diverse identities of students, staff, and families. Shu urged the committee to maintain these observances.
Conversely, some community members, such as parent Ron Silver, argued for a streamlined calendar that only observes federal holidays. Silver suggested that excessive school off days disrupt the educational process and impose financial burdens on families requiring childcare during non-standard holidays. He stressed that a simplified calendar would better serve educational goals by reducing interruptions.
The voices of students were also heard, with fourth grader Yousef from Pierce School sharing concerns about the alienation that could result from removing holidays. He recounted a personal experience where a school event conflicted with a religious observance. Parents like Alati echoed these sentiments, advocating for a balanced approach that respects the community’s diversity.
In addition to the calendar debate, the introduction of artificial intelligence (AI) in schools sparked concern among educators. Sam Dickerman, a long-time social studies teacher at Brookline High School, voiced apprehensions about the use of AI in educational settings. He argued against the decision to enable AI use without consulting teachers or parents, labeling it a threat to the core educational experience. Dickerman warned that AI could lead to reliance on technology and diminish students’ ability to think independently and creatively.
The meeting also addressed significant enrollment trends and their implications for the district. Megan and Susan presented data on student enrollment, noting a total of 6,949 students for the public schools of Brookline, with declines observed in both in-migration and kindergarten class sizes. The committee recognized the need for accurate projections to inform financial and space planning decisions, particularly as they relate to classroom utilization and special education programs.
Further analysis of enrollment data revealed a decline in pre-kindergarten enrollment due to class consolidation, while middle and high school enrollments were closer to projections. The committee acknowledged the complexities of demographic mobility, emphasizing the importance of understanding these dynamics as the district develops its budget for the next fiscal year.
The Brookline School Committee’s discussions also touched on curriculum performance and assessments. The transition from the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System Test (MCAS) as a graduation requirement was highlighted, with the district now tasked with defining its own measure of minimum competency. Performance data from the MCCAST revealed ongoing achievement gaps among high need students, prompting calls for targeted interventions to support these populations.
