Brookline School Committee Faces Overcrowding and Sustainability Challenges
- Meeting Overview:
The Brookline School Committee meeting on December 18, 2025, addressed issues, including overcrowding at Driscoll School and the town’s sustainability efforts. Parents voiced concerns about large class sizes impacting educational quality, while the committee also discussed environmental initiatives, such as the adoption of a municipal decarbonization roadmap and zero-emission vehicle policies.
During the public comment section, multiple parents expressed concerns over class sizes at Driscoll School, particularly in the third grade. One parent advocated for an additional fourth-grade class to alleviate overcrowding, noting that even with this addition, average class sizes would remain around 20 students. They argued that the current class sizes of 24 to 25 students could hinder academic performance and affect students’ social skills and mental health. Another parent, representing the Driscoll Parent-Teacher Organization, presented a petition with 79 signatures urging the committee to consider adding a fourth-grade section. Citing research, they emphasized that smaller classes lead to better educational outcomes, particularly for younger students and those from disadvantaged backgrounds. A recurring theme in the remarks was the need for staffing changes to maintain educational standards.
The committee also discussed sustainability initiatives, focusing on the municipal decarbonization roadmap and zero-emission vehicle policies. The roadmap aims to transition Brookline to a fully electrified system by 2050, targeting a reduction in emissions from buildings and vehicles. The town has already increased its fleet of electric vehicles, and the roadmap outlines further actions, such as replacing outdated heating systems and installing solar arrays on new roofs. However, the roadmap does not address costs or funding sources. The committee was urged to adopt these policies to secure funding by the December 31st deadline. Although there was support for the roadmap, discussions highlighted financial constraints and the need for further analysis.
The meeting included a discussion on the appointment of Robin Benoy as the deputy superintendent for teaching and learning. Despite initial skepticism due to her lack of experience, the committee unanimously supported her advancement, acknowledging her adaptability and positive feedback from staff. The appointment was seen as crucial for ensuring effective educational leadership and continuity within the leadership team.
In addition to leadership appointments, the committee discussed the development of the FY27 school budget, with a focus on aligning with school committee guidelines and aspirational goals. The budget process involves examining efficiencies, reorganization, and new growth opportunities, although strict adherence to predefined categories has proven challenging. The need for restoration of certain positions, such as the Director of Data and Information Systems, was highlighted, emphasizing the importance of data for informed decision-making.
The meeting concluded with updates on various subcommittee and liaison activities, including plans for future discussions on curriculum, diversity, equity, inclusion, and justice initiatives. Negotiations with the Brookline Educators Union were also in progress, with meetings scheduled to discuss initial proposals. In new business, attendees noted the significance of a recent promotion event for police officers, where the first woman was promoted to deputy superintendent, reflecting positively on the community.
