Buena Vista Council Addresses Emergency Call Misrouting and Community Safety Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the Buena Vista Town Council meeting on February 24, 2025, discussions centered around the misrouting of 911 emergency calls and the management of hazardous living conditions within the community. The council also reviewed ordinances concerning land donations and changes to development regulations, and addressed public safety matters related to potholes and trash collection.
A notable subject raised during the public comment segment involved a resident’s concerns about the township’s 911 emergency call system. The resident recounted an alarming incident where a call was delayed in reaching the fire department, suggesting that such delays could have dire consequences, including potential loss of life. The resident emphasized the necessity of public education on effective communication during emergencies, particularly when using cell phones, which may not directly connect to local dispatchers. This individual urged the township to inform residents on how to provide clear, location-specific information during 911 calls to prevent similar issues in the future.
Another pressing matter involved ongoing legal challenges concerning public health violations on a resident’s property. A neighbor detailed the troubling conditions, including the use of a camper with a wood stove and improper waste disposal, creating a public health risk. The neighbor expressed frustration at the lack of action from the township, describing the situation as “out of control” and insisting on more decisive intervention. They noted that the matter would be addressed in an upcoming court date, which was due to consider multiple summonses related to the violations.
Public safety concerns also included discussions about potholes and trash can management. A council member highlighted the severity of potholes and humorously remarked on the timing of repairs possibly coinciding with more snowfall. Another member brought attention to the hazards posed by residents failing to bring in their trash cans after collection days, especially in light of impending snowstorms. The council encouraged residents to promptly remove trash cans from the streets to prevent dangerous road conditions.
The council proceeded to review and adopt several ordinances and resolutions. Ordinance 153-2025, which aims to amend development regulations in accordance with the 2022 master plan recommendations, was introduced and will be referred to the planning board for further consideration. Ordinance 154-2025, regarding the acceptance of land donations for specific blocks and lots, was also introduced, with a public hearing set for March 10, 2025. Additionally, the council adopted Ordinances 151-2025 and 152-2025, both concerning the acceptance of land donations.
Resolution 53-25, authorizing the payment of bills totaling $2,317,988.64, was presented and approved. Adjustmentsllocations were made to the school board and Atlantic County taxes. The council also approved a consent agenda, which included resolutions for releasing a maintenance guarantee for Teligent Pharma, Inc., and authorizing a shared service agreement for countywide lead-based paint inspections in rented dwellings.
Community events and initiatives were another focus of the meeting. The Mayor announced a public works drop-off event on March 1, 2025, addressing an increase in illegal dumping and encouraging responsible disposal of large items. The Mayor also promoted upcoming events, including a blood drive on April 2, 2025, and a Breakfast with the Easter Bunny on April 12, 2025. April was designated as Earth Month, with extended public works services to support disposal and recycling efforts. A community yard sale was scheduled for May 17, 2025, aimed at facilitating spring cleaning efforts.
The meeting concluded with committee reports and an executive session to discuss pending litigation and contract negotiations related to the BBT EMS agreement. The executive session was expected to last approximately ten minutes, and no actions were anticipated following the session.
