Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board Unanimously Approves International and Domestic Student Trips
- Meeting Overview:
In a recent meeting, the Burnsville-Eagan-Savage School Board approved two significant student trips and discussed various initiatives to enhance educational programs for multilingual and indigenous students, alongside a detailed report on the district’s financial health. The board also tackled issues of student engagement, achievement gaps, and upcoming partnerships.
The board unanimously approved two field trips. The first approval was for an international trip organized by the travel club to Budapest, Vienna, and Prague, slated for March 2027. This excursion aims to provide students with cultural, linguistic, and historical exposure, with fundraising efforts underway to make the trip financially accessible. The second approved trip involves the Burnsville baseball team’s traditional spring excursion to Scottsdale, Arizona, scheduled for March 2026. This longstanding tradition emphasizes teamwork and personal development, with community fundraising initiatives in place to offset costs.
The financial audit report, presented by Tyler Denny and Nancy Schultzenberg from Berg and KDV, revealed a positive financial outlook for the district. The audit resulted in an unmodified opinion, reflecting well-managed finances with no compliance issues. A notable highlight was the district’s ability to increase its fund balance by $5.2 million, attributed to careful budget management and increased investment earnings. Despite a decrease in federal funds, the district maintained stable revenue streams from state sources. The audit emphasized the district’s conservative budgeting approach, which consistently results in surplus revenues and under-budget expenditures.
In educational reports, the board received an update on the district’s strategic approach to supporting multilingual learners, particularly at William Burn Elementary School. The interim principal and multilingual teacher discussed the collaborative efforts between general education and multilingual teachers to enhance language instruction. The use of catalyst strategies to reduce verbal clutter and improve clarity was highlighted as a key component of their teaching methodology.
The board also focused on initiatives to support American Indian education, driven by guidance from the American Indian Parent Advisory Committee. Monthly meetings with indigenous families and collaborations with local education committees aim to enhance cultural inclusivity and support student success. Participation in national conferences and local cultural events, such as pow-wows, enriches the educational experience for indigenous students.
In addition, discussions were held on improving achievement and civic readiness, particularly among historically underserved student groups. The board acknowledged ongoing challenges, such as disparities in rigorous coursework enrollment and graduation rates, particularly for BIPOC students. Efforts are underway to align high school curricula and enhance support systems to address these gaps.
This initiative aims to create new opportunities for collaboration following the end of a previous partnership with Lakeville. Input from parent advisory groups will play a role in shaping the goals of this venture.
