Caldwell-West Caldwell School Board Celebrates Successful Referendum for School Improvements
- Meeting Overview:
The Caldwell-West Caldwell School Board meeting on March 17, 2025, primarily focused on the successful passage of a critical referendum aimed at enhancing school safety and infrastructure. The first question of the referendum, which proposed improvements in security, as well as the development of state-of-the-art STEAM facilities, was approved by the community. Meanwhile, the second question regarding the construction of a new athletic complex did not receive voter support.
The approved Question One will facilitate significant enhancements, including safety and security upgrades and the addition of STEAM labs at all four elementary schools. A new STEAM wing will also be developed at James Caldwell High School. Board members expressed gratitude towards the community for their support, emphasizing the importance of these improvements in creating a secure and progressive learning environment. The board acknowledged that the focus on the Fieldhouse overshadowed these critical improvements during discussions.
In contrast, Question Two, which proposed the construction of a new athletic complex to promote equity for female athletes and expand facilities at the high school, did not pass. The board recognized the community’s stance and expressed a commitment to reevaluating the proposal. They plan to collaborate with stakeholders and architects to develop a more financially prudent alternative that aligns with community expectations.
During the meeting, representatives from the middle school highlighted student involvement in engaging activities, such as a leprechaun hunt and preparations for the upcoming spring musical, “Frozen Jr.” These events are aimed at fostering a vibrant school culture.
Additionally, the board president encouraged community participation in the upcoming Music Marathon, emphasizing the importance of supporting student endeavors in the arts. The board is exploring ways to enhance attendance and community engagement with student performances.
The board also briefly discussed the preliminary budget for the 2025-2026 academic year, which must be approved by the Essex County Superintendent of Schools before being made public. The budget includes contributions from the capital reserve towards security upgrades in the schools.
