- Meeting Overview:
The Camden School Board meeting on December 17th featured the swearing-in of two new board members, the recognition of exemplary educators, and discussions on school infrastructure and community concerns. Key topics included the development of the new Eastside High School, a donation of safety equipment to local schools, and ongoing challenges and improvements within the district.
The meeting commenced with the induction of new board members Gabriel Kamacho and Derek Gashaw, who took their oaths of office. Their appointment filled two vacant seats on the board, bringing fresh perspectives to the district’s governance. The assembly applauded them.
A major highlight of the meeting was the discussion surrounding the new Eastside High School. Detailed plans revealed that the school will accommodate 805 students within a 172,000-square-foot facility. This state-of-the-art building will include 44,000 square feet dedicated to shared spaces such as a media center, classrooms, and administrative offices. The Camden County Improvement Authority awarded the demolition contract to USA Windsinger, with demolition set to begin in January 2025. The process will involve community engagement efforts to address concerns and keep residents informed.
Additionally, the meeting addressed crucial developments in educational resources. The Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation Mid-Atlantic Region donated 400 pairs of splash-proof goggles to the district, benefiting science classrooms for grades 6 through 12. The donation alleviates financial pressures and highlights the importance of community partnerships in enhancing educational experiences.
On the human resources front, the district is working to address staffing needs, particularly in special education, Spanish, health, physical education, and science teaching positions. Efforts include sign-on incentives and participation in college fairs to attract qualified candidates, with an anticipated onboarding of ten new teachers soon.
In a progressive move, the district celebrated the graduation of pharmacy technician students from Brimm Medical Arts High School. These students completed a rigorous certification program, preparing them for immediate entry into the workforce or further education.
The meeting also featured a public comment segment, where community members voiced concerns about school conditions and board transparency. Criticism was directed at the state of Kramer High School and the board’s communication practices. Speakers urged the board to take accountability and include more educators in decision-making processes. In response, board members acknowledged the importance of addressing these issues and encouraged proactive community involvement.
The Camden School Board recognized several retiring educators who collectively dedicated decades to the district, with applause acknowledging their service.
Further, the meeting highlighted a partnership with the city of Camden to donate items from the old Eastside High School to students in the Dominican Republic, an initiative aimed at giving educational resources a new purpose.
Finally, the meeting outlined upcoming events, including Pre-K flu vaccination drives, emphasizing compliance with state laws to avoid student exclusion from school.
