Cape May Shade Tree Commission Approves Multiple Tree Removals Amid Safety and Construction Concerns
- Meeting Overview:
During the recent meeting of the Cape May Shade Tree Commission, a series of tree removal requests were discussed and approved, highlighting safety concerns and construction needs. Among the most notable decisions was the approval to remove a leaning blue spruce at the elementary school on Lafayette Street. The tree’s instability, evidenced by its roots emerging from the ground, prompted the commission to agree to its removal for safety reasons. A replacement tree is planned to be planted in its place as part of Arbor Day celebrations this spring.
Another decision involved a Norway maple on Washington Street, which had been frequently trimmed and was declining in health. The city arborist confirmed the tree’s poor condition, leading to the approval of its removal. Similarly, on Congress Street, existing trees, including a magnolia and two crepe myrtles, are slated for removal due to upcoming construction. The property owners have committed to a two-for-one replacement of the trees.
The commission also addressed a removal request for a large fig tree on Ohio Avenue. Despite its health, the tree was considered a nuisance due to its fruiting, and its removal was approved under the condition of replacement. Additionally, a tree on Virginia Avenue will be removed to make way for a new garage, already approved for construction.
In new business, the commission’s meeting schedule was adjusted to Wednesdays at 5:00 p.m., a change that led to the resignation of the current Department of Public Works (DPW) liaison due to scheduling conflicts. The commission will seek a replacement liaison from the DPW.
